McAleese accuses Churches of being ‘conduits for homophobia’ following Sligo deaths

Mary McAleese: a thorn in the church's side?

The former president of Ireland Mary McAleese has accused the major Churches in Ireland of being ‘conduits for homophobia’ following the deaths of two men in Co Sligo.

Ms McAleese said when her gay son got married, she was grateful to live in a country where he and his partner can be together in relative safety, however, she added she is conscious that is not the case in other parts of the world. Ms McAleese said there is “always homophobia, there is always the hatred” that can crop up, adding that there are parts of the world her son “simply cannot visit”.

‘There’ll be a lot of cold homes next winter if this turf ban goes ahead’

Turf contractor Mick Maher thought long and hard before making an offer on the new digger he had found on Done Deal, part of a sell-off by an engineering firm that was closing down.

At €100,000, it was a significant investment – but he was heading into prime turf-cutting season when they would be working flat out from first light for the next eight weeks solid, and he was afraid his old, unreliable machine might let them down. It was available right then, with no lead-in time, and Mick decided that the digger was too good a deal to turn down. And though the 72-year-old contractor had no plans to drive it himself – he “didn’t want to be greedy” – it was set to become an invaluable addition.

The new bog excavator arrived on the back of a truck at Maher’s yard in the picturesquely named townland of Wood-Of-O (coming from the old word for yew trees) outside Tullamore, Co Offaly, late on Friday evening last. Within three days, clear plastic wrap still enrobed its seat as Mick’s livelihood, and that of every turf contractor in the country, lay perilously suspended on a cliff-edge amid news that the sale and distribution of sod peat was to be prohibited from September…

ON THIS DAY – 15th April 1912: RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic – A Donegal Link to the great tragedy…

15th April 1912: RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic after striking an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK, via Queenstown(Cobh), Ireland to New York City. Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, more than 1,500 died…

Neal McNamee, the son of a farm labourer, was born in Ruskey, Convoy, Co. Donegal on 29th of August 1884. As a young man he acquired a job at Lipton’s tea company in Derry. He worked hard, showed great promise and managed to secure a promotion to a new post in Salisbury, in southern England, as branch manager in provisions. It was here he met and fell in love with the lovely Eileen O’Leary, a young woman from Plymouth, who had begun work at Lipton’s as soon as she left school.

Neal and Eileen were wed on 17th of January 1912. The enterprising Donegal man had secured yet another promotion within the company, this time in New York. Sir Thomas Lipton himself wrote a letter of introduction on his behalf. The happily married couple purchased a ticket as third class passengers on the RMS Titanic. Figures vary but it is estimated that they paid £7, the equivalent of £569 today.

A third class ticket usually meant incredibly poor conditions for passengers, who often wouldn’t even survive the journey. However, third class on the RMS Titanic was a different story. The conditions here were equal to second or even first on many other ships. The young couple must have been bursting with excitement and anticipation at he new life that lay ahead of them, rich with promise. The passengers on board the maiden voyage of the Titanic included hundreds of emigrants from throughout Europe seeking a new life and opportunities in America as well as some of the wealthiest and most powerful people in the world.

The newly-weds, Neal aged 27 and Eileen aged 19, sadly never reached New York to begin their promising life together. They perished in the icy waters of the Atlantic along with the other 1,500 victims in what is the most famous ship-wreck of all time. Only 333 bodies were ever recovered and Eileen was among them. Neal was unfortunately never recovered.

A memorial to the couple and a planted tree stands in Winston Churchill Gardens, Salisbury.

Shocked Sligo community left with more questions than answers after two violent deaths

Sligo.ie | Live, Visit, Invest

John Kierans: “Sligo is the county of beautiful beaches, mountains and WB Yeats. But in recent days, it has become known for something a lot more unpleasant.

Everyone I spoke to over the past two days were shocked and angry that this beautiful place famous for its beaches, mountains and poems had seen two violent deaths.
No one could explain it. People kept pinching themselves to see if this was really happening.

But there were more questions than answers on the streets as the whole community comes to terms with the two recent killings.
Everybody wondered how this could happen to decent people like Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee, who were the type of individuals who wouldn’t harm a fly.”

Sligo killings: Vigils planned in memory of Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee

Sligo murders: Vigils for Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee to take place nationwide - Independent.ie

As the country is left reeling from the horrific murders of Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee, a number of vigils for the two men are being planned.

LGBT Ireland said it has been a dark week for the LGBTI+ community in Ireland.

Both men lived alone, and were private, pleasant and inoffensive, according to neighbours.

“He was a highly educated man. He used to work in the financial services and then he set up his own auctioneering business,” local man Pat Devaney said of 42-year-old Mr Moffitt.

“You could approach Aidan about anything… He had loads of friends here and in Roscommon. Sligo people accepted him.”

Mr Snee, 58, was a retired healthcare worker, who had impaired vision in one eye. He lived a quiet life alone with his dog in one of 14 maisonettes in the council-owned sheltered accommodation for about five years.

“He would put out the ashes and light the fire for me, that’s the sort of a neighbour he was,” Thomas McCarrick said.

“It’s just desperate, he was a very pleasant man. It’s tragic. It shouldn’t be happening anywhere,” said another neighbour, Rose McGowan.

In the wake of the double tragedy, groups in Sligo and beyond have planned vigils in memory of the two men.

Eamon Ryan insists Ban on Sale and Distribution of Turf and Smoky Coal WILL proceed

Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan has insisted that a proposed ban on the sale and distribution of turf will proceed from September.

The proposal would also extend a ban on smoky-fuel from certain cities and towns onto a nationwide basis. There is strong opposition to the ban from some Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael TDs in western and midland counties.

Mr Ryan said it was never the intention to stop people cutting turf on their own bogland but that this was made “unclear in the last week because people were just scaring people”.
“It’s not (that) we’re going to put your granny in prison for burning turf from down the road, but it is getting it right where we get our air quality improved.”

He accepted there would be differences but said the scale of change required was so great that “if we do it as a party political thing, a divisive issue, we won’t get the people behind it”
