ON THIS DAY – 15th April 1912: RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic – A Donegal Link to the great tragedy…

15th April 1912: RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic after striking an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK, via Queenstown(Cobh), Ireland to New York City. Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, more than 1,500 died…

Neal McNamee, the son of a farm labourer, was born in Ruskey, Convoy, Co. Donegal on 29th of August 1884. As a young man he acquired a job at Lipton’s tea company in Derry. He worked hard, showed great promise and managed to secure a promotion to a new post in Salisbury, in southern England, as branch manager in provisions. It was here he met and fell in love with the lovely Eileen O’Leary, a young woman from Plymouth, who had begun work at Lipton’s as soon as she left school.

Neal and Eileen were wed on 17th of January 1912. The enterprising Donegal man had secured yet another promotion within the company, this time in New York. Sir Thomas Lipton himself wrote a letter of introduction on his behalf. The happily married couple purchased a ticket as third class passengers on the RMS Titanic. Figures vary but it is estimated that they paid £7, the equivalent of £569 today.

A third class ticket usually meant incredibly poor conditions for passengers, who often wouldn’t even survive the journey. However, third class on the RMS Titanic was a different story. The conditions here were equal to second or even first on many other ships. The young couple must have been bursting with excitement and anticipation at he new life that lay ahead of them, rich with promise. The passengers on board the maiden voyage of the Titanic included hundreds of emigrants from throughout Europe seeking a new life and opportunities in America as well as some of the wealthiest and most powerful people in the world.

The newly-weds, Neal aged 27 and Eileen aged 19, sadly never reached New York to begin their promising life together. They perished in the icy waters of the Atlantic along with the other 1,500 victims in what is the most famous ship-wreck of all time. Only 333 bodies were ever recovered and Eileen was among them. Neal was unfortunately never recovered.

A memorial to the couple and a planted tree stands in Winston Churchill Gardens, Salisbury.

Shocked Sligo community left with more questions than answers after two violent deaths

Sligo.ie | Live, Visit, Invest

John Kierans: “Sligo is the county of beautiful beaches, mountains and WB Yeats. But in recent days, it has become known for something a lot more unpleasant.

Everyone I spoke to over the past two days were shocked and angry that this beautiful place famous for its beaches, mountains and poems had seen two violent deaths.
No one could explain it. People kept pinching themselves to see if this was really happening.

But there were more questions than answers on the streets as the whole community comes to terms with the two recent killings.
Everybody wondered how this could happen to decent people like Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee, who were the type of individuals who wouldn’t harm a fly.”

Sligo killings: Vigils planned in memory of Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee

Sligo murders: Vigils for Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee to take place nationwide - Independent.ie

As the country is left reeling from the horrific murders of Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee, a number of vigils for the two men are being planned.

LGBT Ireland said it has been a dark week for the LGBTI+ community in Ireland.

Both men lived alone, and were private, pleasant and inoffensive, according to neighbours.

“He was a highly educated man. He used to work in the financial services and then he set up his own auctioneering business,” local man Pat Devaney said of 42-year-old Mr Moffitt.

“You could approach Aidan about anything… He had loads of friends here and in Roscommon. Sligo people accepted him.”

Mr Snee, 58, was a retired healthcare worker, who had impaired vision in one eye. He lived a quiet life alone with his dog in one of 14 maisonettes in the council-owned sheltered accommodation for about five years.

“He would put out the ashes and light the fire for me, that’s the sort of a neighbour he was,” Thomas McCarrick said.

“It’s just desperate, he was a very pleasant man. It’s tragic. It shouldn’t be happening anywhere,” said another neighbour, Rose McGowan.

In the wake of the double tragedy, groups in Sligo and beyond have planned vigils in memory of the two men.

‘We won’t put your granny in prison for burning turf’, says Ryan doubling down on no pause comments

ENVIRONMENT MINISTER EAMON Ryan has doubled down on his comments that there has been no pause on plans to regulate the sale and distribution of turf from September.

His comments are contrary to those made by the Tánaiste Leo Varadkar last night to his parliamentary members.
The new regulations would not prevent people who own part of a bog from cutting and burning turf but would impact the sale and distribution of the fossil fuel.

Leo Varadkar told Fine Gael TDs that the regulations set to come in later this year have been paused, but this has been denied this morning. The Tánaiste said removing turf cutting from rural Ireland is like removing wine from the French or pasta from the Italians, according to sources.

Removing turf-cutting from rural Ireland would be like removing wine from the French – Varadkar

PLANS TO REGULATE the sale and distribution of turf from September has been paused, Leo Varadkar has told Fine Gael TDs this evening.

Speaking during a briefing with party members online, the Tánaiste said removing turf cutting from rural Ireland is like removing wine from the French or pasta from the Italians, according to sources.

His comments come just hours after Environment Minister Eamon Ryan defended the plan stating that action must be taken to improve air quality.

HSE paid organisers of “Fyre Festival for kids” 14 million euro to import ventilators

HSE paid organisers of "Fyre Festival for kids" 14 million euro to import ventilators - District Magazine

Forget Tony Holohan, have you heard about this?

This is a tale of overpriced masks, Whatsapp chats and angry yummy mummies. Strap yourself in and read about how the HSE recruited the company that created a “scam” festival for families to import masks and ventilators during the PPE shortage.

Irish-based events management company, Roqu Media International Limited were recruited to import medical ventilators and other supplies for use in Irish hospitals at the very start of the pandemic. In March 2020, the HSE paid the company 14.1 million euro for ventilators from China which were never used due to “issues with the quality”.

Out in the cold: No Vat cuts for families who rely on home heating oil

Taoiseach Micheál Martin's long-awaited plans for Saint Patrick's Day meeting with US President Joe Biden in White House shattered after he contracted Covid - Independent.ie

Families that heat their homes with oil will miss out on moves to address the cost of living crisis by cutting energy Vat rates.

The Government will today announce plans to cut Vat on electricity and gas to ensure homeowners are not impacted by environmental tax increase.

However, they were unable to secure a deal with the EU to allow them also reduce Vat on home heating oil.

This means the proposed carbon tax increase will mean a 900 litre tank of kerosene will go up by €19.40 next month.

Government leaders agreed on Monday night that Vat on electricity and gas will reduce from 13.5pc to 9pc.

Families are still facing an almost €20 increase in their energy bill next month despite Government commitments to offset carbon tax increases.
