Tony Holohan defends €187k appointment to Trinity College, says ‘it is not his intention to return to CMO role’

Omicron unlikely to be last variant of concern, Dr Tony Holohan to warn - Independent.ie

Dr. Tony Holohan has said he has no intention of returning to his role as chief medical officer and that his secondment to Trinity College Dublin is to “develop public health capacity for the future”.

In his first comments on the controversy over his new academic role, Dr Holohan has told the Oireachtas Health Committee: “My secondment to Trinity College Dublin means I have agreed to relinquish my role as Chief Medical Officer; it is not my intention to return to this role at any point in the future. It is important that my successor feels fully empowered and enabled to undertake the role as they see fit.”

The Department of Health is to continue funding his existing €187,000 public service salary while he takes up a newly created role in Trinity, a move that has only emerged in recent days and has prompted questions from ministers and the Opposition.

Dr Tony Holohan keeps Department of Health €187k salary and public sector pension – but politicians can’t explain how he landed new Trinity College role

Dr. Tony Holohan will not be returning as chief medical officer to the Department of Health and his new academic contract with Trinity College is of “indefinite duration”, Department of Health secretary general Robert Watt confirmed today.

He was quizzed at the Oireachtas Health Committee about the controversy over the Department of Health’s decision to continue to pay Dr Holohan’s salary of over €187,000 salary although he will be working as a professor in Trinity College.

Asked by Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway about the decision Mr Watt said Dr Holohan will take on a new role in Trinity and a new permanent chief medical officer would be appointed in his place in the coming months.

Senator Conway said it could mean the Department of Health was funding Dr Holohan’s Trinity post for the “ next 20 years.”

‘Real’ incomes to fall for first time since 2013 with inflation outpacing wage growth

Millennials meet inflation: 'There's never been a worse time to leave your savings sitting in a bank' - Independent.ie

With prices continuing on an upward trajectory, “real” household income — a measure that factors in the rate of inflation — is expected to fall this year for the first time since 2013, according to the Central Bank of Ireland’s latest economic forecasts — its first set since the invasion of Ukraine.

The pace of growth is unlikely to keep up with soaring prices, according to the forecasts, although “broad-based” wage growth is anticipated.
It means “wages are projected to decline this year in real terms”, the Central Bank said, in line with recent analysis by the Economic and Social Research Institute.

LIFE HACK: Some Great Ideas to Reduce Your Energy Costs and Your Environmental Footprint!

Ahead of government advice on energy saving due shortly – we thought we would share some excellent ideas for saving money and energy

Stay in bed for 18 hours a day – whilst your boss/family/friends may not welcome this lifestyle change – just think of all the heating and electricity costs you are saving! #Hot

Walk and Cycle everywhere – as well as saving on fuel – you’ll lose weight and given Ireland’s climate you will likely get soaked everyday, thus saving the need for any showers or baths #Fit

Stop washing yourself completely – you will reduce your water usage and also save on entertainment costs as people will start not inviting you to social events. #Winning

Limit your number of toilet flushes – “Just remember this idiom, ‘If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown flush it down.’” #Lovely

Stop using your washing machine – just go back to 1950’s retro style washing – by soaking everything in soapy water and hand scrub any stains. As a plus – you’ll build up your upper arm strength #Strong

Recycle everything – for example you can always get an extra cup out of every tea bag by hanging them to dry on the washing line – just one of many great recycling ideas! #WhoHoo

Block up your Windows – windows are just terrible for heat loss – block them up and save! #Save

Use Candles instead of electric lights – Give your home a medieval vibe by lighting up candles instead. As a plus, your home will have a more romantic ambiance! #Romantic

Take your chargers everywhere and plug them into any free electric sockets you can find – at your workplace, public buildings, your family and friends houses etc… – better still invest in an industrial charger and run your whole home from it! #SuperSave

Save on your water usage, by installing water tanks outside your home. Admittedly, using untreated water for personal consumption may cause some health issues – but think of all the water you are saving! #SaveWater

Do your bit in the community – if you see people wasting energy – by washing their cars, watering their lawns,
leaving lights on around their home etc… do the responsible thing by banging on their door and giving them a right good talking to! I’m sure they’ll Thank You for it! #Community

Can you think of any we have missed? – Let us know in the comments! You’re Welcome!

Key social welfare payments available to unemployed as PUP comes to an end

The Pandemic Unemployment Payment has finally come to a close after two years of supporting thousands during Covid-19.

The payment was first introduced as the Covid-19 pandemic hit in March 2020 and was originally supposed to only open for six weeks. Now that the final payments have been sent, all remaining recipients will be moved over to job seekers payments from Tuesday – only if they are deemed eligible.

According to citizens’ information, there are a number of support payments that will continue to help those in unemployment in Ireland. There are also a number of benefits that will continue to be available to those who are eligible.

Take shorter showers and drive less to cut costs, Green leader Ryan to suggest…

People will be encouraged to take shorter showers and cut out one car journey a week to bring down their energy costs, under plans being formulated for publication later this month.

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan said on Sunday he would bring a package of measures to Government next week to help with the cost of living.

Sources indicated this would include a public awareness campaign advising steps such as cutting out one car journey a week in favour of walking or taking public transport, taking shorter showers, not filling a kettle to the top if not needed and turning down the thermostat by a degree.

It is not currently envisaged financial measures would be included in the Green Party leader’s plan, but he is expected to tell Cabinet colleagues the Public Service Obligation levy, which is charged to all energy consumers and costs about €57 a year, will be axed from this October and may even be set at a negative rate.

An Interview with Daniel O’Donnell: Reflecting on Music, Family, and Legacy

Daniel O’Donnell, the legendary Donegal singer, graciously agreed to sit down with us for a wee chat about his life, career, and what keeps him going. With his warm smile and easy charm, Daniel welcomed us into his world, offering insights into his journey as one of Ireland’s most beloved musicians.

Q: Daniel, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us today. Let’s start with your early days. Can you tell us about your musical influences growing up in County Donegal?

Daniel: Ah, it’s lovely to be here. Well, growing up in Kincasslagh, music was all around us. My mum and dad were big music fans, especially of country and Irish folk music. I remember listening to the old records with them – the likes of Hank Williams, Jim Reeves, and of course, our very own Irish legends like The Dubliners and The Clancy Brothers. Those tunes really struck a chord with me, you know?

Q: Absolutely, those are some classic tunes! So, when did you realise that you wanted to pursue a career in music yourself?

Daniel: It was a gradual thing, really. I was always singing around the house, and I used to perform at local talent competitions and whatnot. But it wasn’t until I was a bit older that I thought, “Hey, maybe I could do this for a living!” I started gigging around the local pubs and clubs, and before I knew it, I was getting noticed. The rest, as they say, is history!

Q: Your career has certainly been remarkable, with numerous hit albums and sold-out concerts around the world. What do you think is the secret to your enduring success?

Daniel: Well, I reckon it’s all down to staying true to myself and my roots. I’ve never tried to be anything I’m not, you know? I sing the songs I love, the songs that mean something to me, and I think people appreciate that authenticity. Plus, I’ve been blessed with the most amazing fans – they’ve been with me every step of the way, and I couldn’t be more grateful for their support.

Q: You’ve also become known for your philanthropy and charity work. Can you tell us a bit about the causes that are close to your heart?

Daniel: Oh, absolutely. Giving back is so important to me. I’ve been involved with numerous charities over the years, particularly ones that support causes like cancer research, children’s hospitals, and hospices. My wife, Majella, and I have also been patrons of various organisations that provide support to those affected by cancer and mental health issues. It’s something that’s very close to our hearts, and we’re always happy to lend a hand wherever we can.

Q: Speaking of Majella, you two have become quite the dynamic duo, both personally and professionally. How do you manage to balance your careers with your family life?

Daniel: Ah, well, it’s all about teamwork, isn’t it? Majella has been my rock from day one – she’s my biggest supporter and my closest confidante. We’ve been through so much together, both the highs and the lows, and I think that’s what makes our bond so strong. As for balancing work and family, we just take each day as it comes and try to make the most of every moment we have together. Family always comes first, no matter what.

Q: Looking ahead, what’s next for Daniel O’Donnell? Any exciting projects or plans on the horizon?

Daniel: Well, I’ve always got a few things up my sleeve! I’ve got a new album in the works, which I’m really excited about. It’s going to be a mix of old favourites and some new tunes that I think people are going to love. And of course, there’s always the touring – I can’t wait to get back on the road and perform for all the wonderful folks who’ve supported me over the years. As long as there’s music to be sung and people to sing it to, I’ll be there, giving it my all.

And with that, our chat with Daniel O’Donnell came to an end. With his infectious positivity and genuine warmth, Daniel left us feeling uplifted and inspired, reminding us of the power of music to unite and uplift us all. Here’s to many more years of music, laughter, and love from the one and only Daniel O’Donnell.
