Dublin off the mark in National Football League with victory over Tyrone

Dublin have gotten their first win of the National Football League thanks to a 0-13 to 0-8 victory over Tyrone in Healy Park.

The All Ireland champions trailed 0-11 to 0-2 at half time and their task was made harder when Padraig Hampsey was shown a red minutes into the second half.

The Red Hands battled but couldn’t bridge the gap as they fell to a five point defeat.

Highest number of Covid-19 hospitalisations since January recorded

There’s been a jump in the number of patients in hospital with Covid-19.

The figure’s risen from 895 yesterday to 957 today – that’s the highest figure since January 19th.

The number of patients in intensive care remains unchanged at 41.

Those figures come as Letterkenny University Hospital now has the joint-highest number of Covid-19 patients of any hospital in the Republic of Ireland.

As of 8 o’clock last night, there were 78 Covid positive patients admitted to LUH – a level only matched by Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

Fuel price rises could continue for next 4-6 weeks

Industry experts say they expect volatility in the price of fuel to continue for another 4 to 6 weeks.

This week an emergency measure to cut excise duty on petrol and diesel was brought in, as drivers witnessed record prices at the pumps.

However, costs are still in the region of 2-euro a litre despite the new tax cuts.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission received 83 complaints in relation to fuel prices over the past week.

Suspected drug driver was also 30 km/h over speed limit – Gardaí

 

Gardaí in Letterkenny say they arrested a motorist who was more than 30 km/h over the speed limit within the town – while allegedly driving under the influence of drugs.

They say the motorist was detected driving at over 80 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, and that the driver then subsequently tested positive for the presence of cocaine and was arrested under suspicion of drug driving.

The driver will face court proceedings in due course, and Gardaí are again reminding the public never to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Price of coal could rise by up to €4.50 per bag from tomorrow

 

The cost of a bag of coal is expected to rise by up to 4 euro 50 cents from tomorrow for some.

CPL Fuels, one of Ireland’s biggest coal suppliers and distributors, said it was raising the price of coal, in response to an increase in the cost of materials, and the war in Ukraine.

An estimated 80,000 homes nationwide depend on coal for heating.

The charity Alone has called on the government to intervene to prevent a further rise in fuel poverty.

Ireland has accepted 5,500 Ukrainian refugees – Taoiseach

The Taoiseach says Ireland has welcomed 5-and-a-half thousand Ukrainian refugees.

Micheal Martin has been questioned about the policy by British media during his visit to London.

However the Taoiseach says this is an EU wide decision, and it is simply the right thing to do – to help people flee a vicious war.

Micheal Martin told the BBC that people here in Ireland are absolutely shocked and appalled at what Russian soldiers are doing in Ukraine…

LUH now has joint-highest number of Covid patients in Ireland

Letterkenny University Hospital has the joint-highest number of Covid-19 patients of any hospital in the Republic of Ireland.

As of 8 o’clock last night, there were 78 Covid positive patients admitted to LUH – a level only matched by Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

895 people are in hospitals nationally with the virus, a drop of 12 since Friday – but a sharp rise compared to figures last month.

Sinn Fein remain top party as Fine Gael pass Fianna Fail in polls

Fine Gael has edged back in front of Fianna Fail in the latest political polls – however Sinn Fein is still the most popular party in the Republic of Ireland.

The Sunday Times Behaviour and Attitudes survey has Leo Varadkar’s party up 4 percent, to 24.

Fianna Fail has dropped two percentage points, sitting at 23 at the moment.

Government coalition partner the Green Party has also seen its popularity fall by a percent, to 4.

However Sinn Fein remains the most popular party in the country with a drop of 1 percent to 33.

Kevin McCrystal and his Management Team step down from Tyrone Ladies GFA

Tyrone Ladies GFA have confirmed that Senior Team Manager Kevin McCrystal and his Management Team have stepped down from their roles with immediate affect.

Tyrone Chairperson Donna McCrory and her Executive have wished Kevin and his backroom team the very best with their future activities and thanked them all for their time and dedication to the Tyrone Senior Ladies.

Tyrone Senior Ladies and Executive are working hard together in preparation for the relegation playoff on April 3.

Institute and Dergview suffer league defeats

Institute and Dergview both suffered defeats in the NIFL Championship on Saturday afternoon.

Stute were beaten 1-0 by Queens University, Rabdinho with the games only goal.

Meanwhile Dergview lost out 3-1 away to Ballyclare.

Dergview had taken the lead on 25 minutes through Matthew Buchanan before three goals in 12 minutes from Ian Fletcher, Caiolan Brennan and Liam Hassin sealed Ballyclare’s victory.
