Donegal women encouraged to run for election

More Donegal women are being encouraged to enter the race in the next local elections.

Only four women were elected onto Donegal County Council in 2019, equating to an 11% representation – well below the national average of 25%.

In the last General Election, no woman was elected across the five available Dáil seats in Donegal, making the constituency one of 11 in the country without female representation in the Dail.

Megan Riley Training and Engagement Lead Women for Election says their goal ultimately would be to see a 50/50 balance on a national level:

Northern Ireland no longer has a fully functioning government.

The resignation of First Minister Paul Givan came into effect at midnight, after only 8 months in the role.

Deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill is automatically removed from her post as a result.

Donegal Deputy Pádraig Mac Lochlainn says an election must be brought forward:

Could the Mica redress scheme be even further delayed?

The Tanaiste says he would be ‘extremely surprised’ if the enhanced Mica Redress Scheme was not up and running by ‘the end of the year’.

Legislation is expected to go through the Dail and Seanad shortly but hopes were previously dashed for homeowners of the scheme being assessible thereafter.

The scheme has faced countless delays and it had been thought that it could be late summer before it’s available to those affected.

Leo Varadkar was responding to questions in the Dail on the issue from Deputy Rose Conway Walsh:

Responding, the Tanaiste says the legislation is a priority for Government:

Meanwhile the PRO of the Mica Action Group has decsribed the commentary in the Dail yesterday as deeply concerning.

It comes as a meeting between Minister Charlie McConalogue and Mica representatives is taking place tonight.

PRO Michael Doherty says the level of disorganisation within Government at this late stage is terrible.

He says he will be seeking clarity from the Minister this evening:

Medical cards and car tax measures being looked at to deal with cost of living

A revision of the income limits for medical cards and a cut in car tax are among the measures the Government is said to be considering to help people deal with the cost of living.

It emerged yesterday that an increase in the credit being applied to energy bills next month may also be applied.

Government sources have told the Irish Independent that the fuel allowance season may also be extended to help those on the lowest incomes, while a reduction in the VAT rate on energy bills and certain foods is also under consideration.

Pringle concerned at implications of EU Asylum Integration Fund

A Donegal TD has expressed scepticism about the EU’s Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund, which has been debated in the Dail ahead of its adoption by the Irish government.

The fund’s aim is to strengthen and develop all aspects of the common European asylum system, with a number of stated aims, including support for legal migration, countering irregular migration, and ensuring effectiveness of return and readmission in third countries.

Deputy Thomas Pringle told the Dail that sentences like that send a clear message………

Mickey McCann says two wins vital in fight to stay in Hurling Div2b

The Donegal Hurlers begin their 2022 National Hurling League Division 2B campaign this Sunday when they host London at the O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny (12noon start).

With away games to come against Sligo, Wicklow and Mayo, winning their two home games against London and Derry is vital if they are to stay in the Division.

Donegal have Danny Cullen and Declan Coulter back in the side after the pair missed the pre-season McGurk Cup.

The game will be London’s first inter county tie in nearly two years because of the pandemic.

Speaking with Oisin Kelly, Donegal Hurling Manager Mickey McCann feels if London retain the quality they had a couple of season ago, they will be tough to beat:
