Naomh Conaill fined by Donegal CCC

Naomh Conaill Captain Ciaran Thompson lifts the Dr Maguire Cup

The latest twist in the 2020 Donegal Senior Championship will see Naomh Conaill keep the title of winners but have been fined €5000.

Naomh Conaill won the delayed final on penalties in August last year but Kilcar appealed the result, stating the Glenties side had used too many substitutes.

This was upheld by the Donegal CCC but the matter was send back to the county following an Ulster ruling that there was an infringement on the video evidence used in the process.

The reformed appeals committee in Donegal have now fined Naomh Conaill and both clubs can again appeal the latest decision.

One of Highland Radio’s original directors has passed away.

Mary Mac Intyre was the wife of Capt. Kevin Mac Intyre, one of the founders of Highland Radio, and the man who suggested the name when an initial licence application was being considered.

Sadly, he never got to see his vision realised, passing away before the station opened in March 1990.

Mary subsequently took his place on the board, serving for a number of years and helping to oversee the birth and growth in popularity of Highland Radio.

Mary was the mother of Ken, Ann Marie, Aidan and Pearse, and was a former Lady Captain and Lady President in Dunfanaghy Golf Club.

€12m Lettermacaward water treatment plant upgrade project progresses

Significant progress has been made on a €12 million project to upgrade the Water Treatment Plant in Lettermacaward.

Irish Water has confirmed that the construction contract for the work has been signed.

The €12 million upgrade project aims to support economic, social development and tourism in the Lettermacaward area while reducing the risk of supply interruptions and ensuring compliance with EU Drinking Water Regulations as well as providing a safer, more reliable water supply for homes and businesses.

Works on the project are expected to commence in the coming months and will take around two years to complete.

John McElwaine, Asset Delivery Regional Lead with Irish Water, says the project will involve an upgrade to the existing water treatment plant at the Lettermacaward site as well as increasing water storage on site.

The construction of a new water main from Derkmore Lough to the water treatment plant is also said to be another important element of this project.

Improvements to the network are also being undertaken with the construction of two network booster pumping stations which will serve the Portnoo, Rosbeg, Drimlaghdrid, Derrydruel and Maghery areas.

Paul Givan is to resign as First Minister in Stormont – BBC

The BBC is reporting this morning that Northern Ireland’s First Minister Paul Givan intends to announce his resignation later today, as part of the DUP’s protest against the Northern Ireland Protocol.

That would see Deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill also lose her position.

Meanwhile, the British Government says it’s not intervening over the suspension of some post-Brexit checks at ports in Northern Ireland.

Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots has ordered officials to halt the process – although it’s not clear if those orders are being followed.

Lorries are still being received at a checking facility in Belfast Port this morning.

‘Can’t understand suspension of checks on goods’ – Senator Blaney

The move to suspend checks on goods arriving into Northern Ireland ports from Britain could be another escalation of efforts by the DUP against the Northern Ireland protocol.

That’s according to Donegal Senator Niall Blaney who is a member of the Good Friday Agreement Committee and Fianna Fail spokesperson on Northern Ireland.

The suspension of checks came into effect overnight, following an order by the North’s Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots – although it’s not clear if those orders are being followed.

Lorries are still being received at a checking facility in Belfast Port this morning.

Senator Blaney says he can’t understand the decision taken as the protocol appears to be working well for the benefit of everyone:

Photo Geraldine Diver / Donegal GAA

Ciaran Thompson will not feature for Donegal in this Sunday’s National Football Legaue game with Kildare at McCumahill Park but is expected to be back for the Kerry trip in two weeks time.

The Naomh Conaill Captain picked up a strain injury in the opening minutes of last Sunday’s draw with Mayo and he will not be risked this weekend.

St Eunan’s Caolan Ward also went off in that game and is seen as a major doubt for the tie against the Lilywhites as both sides look for a first win of the campaign.

The duo have been on the treatment table this week along with Hugh McFadden, Jamie Brennan, Oisin Gallen and Stephen McMenamin.
