40,000 vacant jobs in tourism sector

There are currently 40 thousand vacant jobs in the Irish tourism sector.

Tourism Ireland says that 30 percent of staff have left the tourism industry since the beginning of the covid pandemic.

A new report to be released next week is expected to indicate that many hospitality businesses have had to cut down on services – such as curtailing menus or restricting opening hours.

Blind fury and anger over treatment of fishermen – MacLochlainn

The Agriculture and Marine Minister has been told there is blind anger and fury over how fishermen are treated.

Speaking in the Dail last evening on the Sea Fisheries Amendment Bill, Donegal Deputy Padraig MacLochlainn relayed his concern that fishermen are being criminalised by current legislation surrounding the penalty points system.

Deputy MacLochlainn believes it is second class citizenship for those in the sector and an attack on their rights to be considered innocent until proven guilty.

He told Minister Charlie McConalogue in the Dail that there needs to be an urgent change in the legislation:

Troubles victims to meet Taoiseach today

A cross-community group of Troubles victims will meet with the Taoiseach in Dublin later seeking support against the UK government’s proposed amnesty for legacy killings.

The British government claims its plan to block investigations into crimes committed by security forces or paramilitaries would help with reconciliation.

But opposition politicians and victims groups have criticised the move, saying it would deny truth and justice for thousands of people.

Raymond McCord, whose son was killed by loyalist paramilitaries in the 90s, is among those meeting the Taoiseach later:

Donegal school to get outdoor forest classroom

An outdoor based forest classroom is to be established in a Donegal school.

Coillte and the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce are delivering six new An Choill Bheags (little woodlands) in primary and secondary schools across Ireland, one of which will be based in Monreagh NS in Lifford.

An Choill Bheag is a long-term educational programme, an initiative of LEAF Ireland and the EEU of An Taisce.

The aim of the initiative is to create small, dense native woodland habitats for biodiversity and an educational and recreational resource for the whole school community to enjoy.

Coillte is providing the native trees (including such species as oak, alder, wild cherry, rowan, scots pine, willow and whitethorn among others) for the students to plant and is funding the programme.

An Taisce will create the little woodlands in collaboration with students and staff in the six schools.

Students are encouraged to connect with woodland culture and biodiversity to understand their benefits to society, climate change, biodiversity and their local economy.

An Choill Bheag (little woodland) is an outdoor living classroom, which will bring small, dense, biodiverse native woodland habitats to school grounds.

Furthermore, as these woodlands develop, it’s envisaged that nature trails can be fostered and managed.

The key objectives of An Choill Bheag are to:
• Involve students in site selection and tree planting
• Encourage proactive, practical and sustainable tree planting
• Provide students with the necessary skills to maintain, monitor and study essential ecosystems for long term use

Harkin calls upon fans to get behind the club ahead of the 2022 Premier Division campaign; “For anyone who knows me I’ve always held the view that the key to sustainable football is season tickets, football has so many variables from table position to weather or health restrictions, to be able to plan and budget we need to provide more security to the club, in return the club provides a decent discount on that upfront commitment.

As a fan-owned club, our strength comes from our ability to pull together from the players and staff on the pitch, to volunteers and supporters on the terraces and further afield.

In recent seasons fans have got used to buying the match night tickets online, now you can buy your season ticket with ease on our store, you will receive an immediate barcode which will provide access to the ground and a credit card sized season ticket available for collection.
