Taoiseach praises Bloody Sunday commemorations

The Taoiseach has praised the Bloody Sunday families and the people of Derry after travelling to the city for last weekend’s 50th anniversary commemorations.

Speaking in the Dail during a discussion on legacy issues in the context of the New Decade New Approach, Michael Martin said the message of the weekend was one of resilience and abiding hope:

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach says an amnesty for crimes during the Troubles would be challenged in the courts for many years.

It comes ahead of Micheál Martin’s meeting with victims’ families in Dublin tomorrow.

They’re campaigning against the British government’s plan to ban all prosecutions relating to the Northern conflict.

The Taoiseach says he’s strongly against the proposal:

Post Title

Work is due to get underway in the coming weeks on the water supply in Buncrana.

The new water mains are set to reduce the high level of leakage in the area and will increase security of supply and reliability.

Irish Water, working in partnership with Donegal County Council, is replacing approximately 900m of old water mains in Castlenacor, Buncrana which Irish Water says will provide a more safe and secure water supply for homes and businesses in the area.

The works will also reduce the high level of leakage and bursts in the area.

Outlining the benefits of these works Declan Cawley, Irish Water, explained that these essential works will benefit customers by replacing ageing water mains with new and improved modern pipes.

The works may involve some short-term water interruptions and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions.

Irish Water understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and say that works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.

The works are scheduled to commence in early February.

‘Exam-only Leaving Cert missed opportunity’ – CRA

The government’s approval of an exam-only Leaving Cert is a missed opportunity for meaningful reform, according to a youth advocacy group.

Yesterday it was announced this year’s exam won’t have predictive grading and instead give students fewer questions and greater choice to answer.

It comes despite calls from students for the hybrid model to remain due to Covid disruption.

Chief Executive of the Children’s Rights Alliance, Tanya Ward, says it’s unacceptable students voices are being ignored:

Doherty clashes with Taoiseach over Bobby Storey funeral

Taoiseach Michael Martin has clashed with Donegal Deputy Pearse Doherty in the Dail this afternoon, after Deputy Doherty raised questions about the party held by Department of Foreign Affairs staff after Ireland secured a place on the UN Security Council.

Deputy Doherty asked if Minister Simon Coveney would come to the Dail to answer questions about the incident after the internal report on what happened was released to the media last night.
