Fuel price-gouging complaints rise with rising prices

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission received 83 complaints in relation to fuel prices over the past week.

The Dail heard claims retailers had increased prices, ahead of an emergency vote on Wednesday night to cut to excise on petrol and diesel – something they’ve denied.

Prices are still in the region of 2-euro a litre despite the new tax cuts, designed to take 15c a litre off the price at the pumps.

The CCPC says it has written to petrol retailers to remind them of their obligations under consumer protection law.

Michael Grubb is a Professor of Energy and Climate Change at University College London.

He says prices had already been rising globally since Covid-19 lockdowns came to an end:

LUH sees 80 percent rise in Covid patients in one week

Letterkenny University Hospital now has the second-highest number of Covid-19 hospitalisations in the Republic of Ireland, according to the latest HSE data.

There were 79 Covid-19 patients admitted at LUH as of 8pm last night – that’s up from 42 just a week ago, a rise of 80%.

The current national figure for Covid hospitalisations meanwhile is 907 – compared to 583 on February 26th – an increase of 56%.

Yesterday was also the first time in seven weeks that the national number went above 900.

Donegal GP Ciarán Ó Fearraigh says he doesn’t expect that hospital figure to fall in the near future:

Funding for villages within Derry City-Strabane district approved

Members of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Environment and Regeneration committee have approved match funding of over £220,000 for the Covid Recovery Small Settlements Programme for projects in several villages within the district.

This regeneration programme aims to address long standing issues such as rural poverty, isolation and access to services in small settlements with a population of less than 5,000 people.

At Wednesday’s committee meeting, members were advised that following submission of an application by Council, a letter of offer has been received from the lead department, DfC, awarding the total grant sum of £2,023,000, which is 90% of the overall programme value.

Members approved the supply of 10% match funding from Council.

The committee heard more about the projects which will be funded through the programme and include Newtownstewart, Castlederg, Sion Mills, Claudy, Park, and Eglinton.

All projects will be delivered directly by Council and involve revitalisation schemes to shop fronts and public spaces, and environmental and access upgrades in local forests and parks.
Chair of Council’s Environment and Regeneration committee, Cllr Ruairí McHugh, welcomed the funding.

The decision will come before Full Council for ratification at the end of March.

Council urged to install safety measures on Carrigart approach roads

Donegal County Council is being urged to install electronic speed signage on approach roads to Carrigart in a bid to slow down traffic.

Councillor Gerry McMonagle is calling for additional safety measures to be put in place on the roads from Milford and Creeslough.

It follows a recent public meeting during which concerns were raised over the volume and speed of traffic passing through the town particularly near the local national school.

Councillor McMonagle believes electronic signage would go some way in deterring motorists from speeding:

Calls for inland harbours to be included in Brexit relief packages

There are calls for island piers and harbors to be included in Brexit relief funds.

Donegal Deputy Thomas Pringle has told Government that there is a need for Ireland’s offshore islands to be included in the rollout of the Brexit Adjustment Reserve funding and to be funded significantly.

The €5.4 billion Brexit Adjustment Reserve has been established to support all EU member states. The European Commission will allocate €920.4 million from the reserve to Ireland, making Ireland the biggest beneficiary.

Deputy Pringle told the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform that it’s vital that adequate infrastructure is in place for the fishing industry:
