Council vote to suspend Cllr McBrearty from meeting

Donegal County Council has voted by 32 votes to one to remove Cllr Frank McBrearty from its monthly meeting in the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny.

The only Cllr to record a no vote was Cllr Michael Cholm MacGiolla Easbuig ; Cllr McBrearty himself did not record a vote.

Matty Smith joins Derry to compete for trophies

St Pats top goalscorer in 2021 Matty Smith is the latest recruit at Derry City, joining the Brandywell club on a 2-year deal.

The 24-year old Scot began his career at his hometown club Dundee United before joining Waterford in 2020.

He moved to Inchicore at the start of last year and was top goalscorer for St Pats as they finished second in the league.

Ruaidhri Higgins was quick to make a move during the close season and was more than happy this morning to confirm that the Scot was on his way to the Brandywell.

“We are absolutely delighted to welcome Matty to the club” said the Manager.

“He will add to the exciting attacking options we already have here, and myself along with all the coaching staff are really excited to get working with him.”

Smith said he was coming to Derry looking to compete for trophies.

“The club has brought in some quality players recently and along with the lads who were already there, it’s now a really strong squad.’
“I am very impressed with what Ruaidhri is building here”

“…and I obviously worked with ‘Renny’ at Waterford and know how good a coach he is.”

‘I’ve been to the Brandywell before and even with few fans in you always knew you were in for a tough game. I’m really excited to be a part of this and am very much looking forward to playing in front of a packed house there.”

Monthly council meeting adjourned multiple times

Donegal County Council’s monthly meeting has been adjourned three times, the first time within five minutes of its opening.

As minutes from the November meeting were being discussed, Cllrs Gary Doherty and Nicholas Crossan asked what the situation was regarding claims made at that meeting of systematic corruption in Donegal County Council.

The claims had been made by Cllr Frank McBrearty.

Cllr Doherty asked if the claims had been substantiated, and if so, were they being fully investigated. That was echoed by Cllr Crossan.

Responding, Cathaoirleach Cllr Jack Murray said these were very serious allegations, at which point Cllr McBrearty rose to his feet asking ‘Are you a member if An Garda Siochana?’

When asked to sit down, Cllr McBrearty refused, pointing to a box of files on the table before him saying ‘Here’s your evidence’.

Cllr Murray then adjourned the meeting for ten minutes.

When the meeting resumed, Cllr Murray began to outline his discussions with Chief Executive John McLaughlin, at which point Cllr McBrearty rose again asking ‘Where’s your mandate to investigate anything?’.

The meeting then adjourned for a second time, with Cllr McBrearty continuing to interject from the floor.

Upon attempting to reconvene the meeting for a third time, disruption continued and the meeting of Donegal County Council has once again been adjourned.

It is hoped to get underway again shortly.

Farmers have been calling for government to move quickly on the appointment, with many unhappy at how costs and profits are shared along the food supply chain.

Public urged to share experiences of apartments and duplexes defects in Donegal

The Minister for Housing. Local Government and Heritage is urging people in Donegal to share their experiences of defects relating to fire safety, structural safety and water ingress in purpose-built apartment and duplex buildings constructed in Donegal between 1991 and 2013.

It forms part of the work of the Independent Working Group to Examine Defects in Housing which was established by Minister Darragh O’Brien in February 2021.

Minister O’Brien says understanding the experiences of those directly affected by fire safety, structural safety and water ingress defects in apartment and duplex buildings constructed in Donegal between 1991 and 2013 will help in understanding the scale of the issue and the full extent of legacy problems so that they can be addressed.

The online survey portal is open to; homeowners, landlords, directors of Owners’ Management Companies and Property Management Agents regardless of whether defects in the properties are known, unknown or where no such defects have arisen.

The working group will use the information to inform its report to the Minister with particular regard to the nature and scale of the issue of fire safety, structural safety and water ingress defects, the difficulties that arise following the discovery of these defects and the costs and levies associated with the remediation of the defects.

The deadline for the surveys is Monday March 14th.

Proposal to extend Castlefin-Carrigans greenway

There have been calls to extend the Castlefin to Carrigans greenway, in order to connect it with Derry city.

The Castlefin-Carrigans greenway was granted funding for construction in 2020, and local Cllr Paul Canning believes some of that funding should be used to extend the greenway to the border into Northern Ireland just outside Carrigans.

Cllr Canning says linking the greenway to an existing walkway at the border makes sense:
