Darragh Kelly wants to start pro career with a big performance

Darragh Kelly will make his MMA professional debut next month on the Bellator bill at the 3Arena in Dublin.

The Moville man will take on Englishman Junior Morgan on February 25 in their re-arranged bout which was called off in November, the night before the fight.

Kelly who trains under John Kavanagh was the number one ranked lightweight and featherweight in Europe before he turned pro.

Letterkenny U18’s chase Ulster title this weekend

Youth Rugby is thriving in Letterkenny with the U18s playing in the Ulster Club League final this weekend.

Letterkenny travel to Ballymoney on Saturday to compete against the host who they have met and beaten twice already this season in the regional league rounds.

The 27 strong squad has matured over the season as they clearly relish the expansive style of rugby that is being coached at the club.

The side is made up of players from Letterkenny and surrounding areas including Milford, Trentagh, Fanad, Falcarragh, Glenties, Newtown and Strabane.

Under coach Kevin Arnold, they train twice weekly and are all fighting for their positions in the 1VX for the Saturday game.

Letterkenny met an experienced Carrickfergus in the Semi-final at home in Dave Gallaher Park .

Try’s came from Cillian Boyle, David Henry and Ultan Mc Guinness and Ewan Douglas with two conversions and a penalty helped them to a 27-7 win.

Men of the Match went to two Milford men Ewan Douglas for his powerful attack runs and Ryan Orsi for consistently dominating the lineout and some huge defence.

Two drug driving arrests in Buncrana

Buncrana Roads Policing Unit arrested two drivers yesterday on suspicion of drug driving. Both drivers failed the oral fluid preliminary drug test, testing positive for cannabis.

Gardai say that initially, one of the drivers had been stopped as they had not been wearing their seatbelt and it then transpired that they may not have been insured to drive.

Their vehicle was detained.

‘Positive’ talks ahead of Russian marine exercises

Talks between representatives from the Irish Fishing Industry and the Russian Ambassador have been described as “extremely positive”.

The two sides met this morning so that fishermen could raise their concerns over the impact Russian Navy drills may have on their sector, when they get underway next week.

A “buffer zone” is being considered, so both trawlers and military boats can co-exist.

Britain Foreign Secretary in Belfast to discuss Brexit protocol

Britain’s Foreign Secretary is visiting Belfast today to discuss the operation of the Brexit protocol.

Liz Truss says she will hear from communities and businesses affected by it.

She’s tweeted that she remains determined to negotiate a solution with the EU.

Ms Truss says the focus must be on protecting the Good Friday Agreement and fixing the protocol.

Finn Harps recruit Filip Mihaljević

Croatian Filip Mihaljević has become the eighth new signing at Finn Harps ahead of the 2022 League of Ireland Premier Division campaign.

The 29 year old forward came through Dinamo Zagreb’s academy and was capped at underage level for Croatia. He spent last season at Visakha FC in Cambodia, netting 13 times in 15 appearances. He has also played in Croatia, Bulgaria and Italy.

He joins the likes Erol Erdal Aikan, Yoyo Magdy, Bastién Hery, Jose Carrillo and Regan Donelan as the new faces around Finn Park.

Filip told FinnHarps.ie: “I’m delighted to sign with Finn Harps. I’ve settled well and the lads in the squad have been great. I’m excited for the season ahead and to meet the supporters very soon.”

Ollie Horgan told club media: “Filip has done well since he’s come in. He’s experienced and has scored goals wherever he’s played. It might take him some time to settle in and adjust to the intensity of the league here but I’m confident he’ll be a good player for us.”

LYIT drawn with NUIG in Sigerson Quarter Finals

The Letterkenny Institute of Technology will play NUIG in the quarter finals of the Sigerson Cup next week.

Maxi Curran’s side progressed to the last eight by beating UCD in Convoy and will face the students from the west next Tuesday in Dangan, Galway with the throw in to be confirmed.

Also on Tuesday, University Limerick will meet Queens in Dublin while on Wednesday DCU play University Ulster and MTU Kerry will be up against Maynooth.
