Return of jobseekers payments to post offices ‘good news for Donegal’

It’s anticipated that the return of jobseekers payments to post offices will ensure the viability of many rural facilities in Donegal.

The changes will initially apply to all new jobseeker applicants, before being extended to other jobseekers over the coming months.

When public health restrictions were introduced in 2020, people in receipt of social welfare were given the option of being paid into a bank account.

Finola McBride Executive Member of the Irish Postmasters Union for Donegal says the move will have far reaching benefits for rural communities:

Need for community communication highlighted in Buncrana survey

A Community Worker in Buncrana says a survey carried among ethnic minorities last year shows the need for more communication and understanding.

Ruth Garvey-Williams is a volunteer with the Exchange Community Centre, and was involved in the survey which spoke to over 100 people from different ethnic backgrounds who have moved to Buncrana within the past 10 years.

She says some respondents did report of discrimination and abuse, the vast majority of it verbal in nature, with a relatively small amount of physical abuse recorded.

Ruth Garvey-Williams told Greg Hughes on today’s Nine til Noon Show that the need for dialogue and discussion cropped up again and again…………..

Calls for comprehensive mental health strategy for young people

The government needs to do more to ensure the country’s child mental health services are fully staffed and resourced.

That’s according to Mental Health Reform, which says a report detailing serious clinical oversight in south Kerry raises concerns about other CAHMS services.

The review found 227 children were exposed to risky treatment, and 46 were harmed significantly, after being prescribed inappropriate medication by a junior doctor.

Meanwhile a Donegal Deputy has called for a comprehensive mental health strategy for young people.

Speaking during statements in the Dail on Youth Mental Health, Deputy Pearse Doherty says the evidence is clear that much more needs to be done to support young people.

He has warned that calls for additional help cannot continue to fall on deaf ears:

Government warned against any plan to reduce national herd

The government’s being warned against any plan to reduce the national herd, ahead of a meeting of farmers in Dublin later.

Climate’s set to dominate discussions at the Irish Farmers Association’s AGM, which will be attended by the Taoiseach and Agriculture Minister.

The farming sector has a target of reducing emissions by between 22 and 30 percent by 2030 under the Climate Action Plan.

IFA President, Tim Cullinan, believes there are ways of achieving that, without impacting on animal numbers:
