Mica Scheme will be rolled out ‘as quickly as possible’

The Taoiseach says Government will work to ensure the Mica Redress Scheme is operational as quickly and as effectively as possible.

It’s emerged in recent weeks that despite being unveiled to much fan fare, affected homeowners won’t be able to access the scheme for many months yet.

Donegal Deputy Padraig MacLochlainn told the Dail that the legislation needs to be brought before the house as a matter of urgency.

While not confirming a date as to when the scheme would be rolled out, Micheal Martin says Government wants to do right by families:

‘School profiling’ may be used in hybrid leaving scenario

Controversial ‘school profiling’ may have to be used if a decision is taken to opt for a hybrid leaving certificate this year.

A decision is expected soon in relation to what form the state exams will take this year, but according to the Irish Times, the Government has been advised that profiling may be needed to counteract grade inflation.

The examination of a schools historical performance had been under consideration in 2020, but was dropped after claims it could penalise students attending schools in disadvantaged areas.

Calls for passport office to open 7 days a week

There are calls for the passport office to open 7 days a week.

The Irish Examiner reports that the office is set to be flooded with up to 1.7 million applications in the weeks and months ahead as families scramble to book foreign holidays.

There’s already a backlog of 113 thousand passports in the system because of disruption caused by covid lockdowns.

Fine Gael Senator Garret Ahearn has called for the office to be opened 7 days a week until what he called the passport ’emergency’ is over.

Lack of broadband in rural Donegal is unacceptable – Flynn

The Seanad has been told that giving people the right to ask if they can work from home is meaningless in many rural areas where the rollout of broadband is still a long way off.

Independent Senator Eileen Flynn said Donegal and other rural counties should be prioritised in the National Broadband Plan roll-out, but instead, the county is one where almost nothing has happened so far.

Senator Flynn said a decade after then Minister Pat Rabbitte described broadband as the ‘rural electrification of the 21st century’, most of rural Ireland has been left behind……..

Council to explore funding avenues for Moville & Greencastle

Donegal County Council is to examine whether regeneration funding could be secured for Moville and Greencastle.

The issue was raised at a recent Municipal District meeting by Cllr Martin Farren, who says the success of other towns in Inishowen and further afield can be repeated.

He says while they are separate towns in their own right, it makes sense to consider Moville and Greencastle together:
