Man in custody following incident on outskirts of Letterkenny

 

A man has been arrested following an incident on the outskirts of Letterkenny.

It happened last night at around 9pm in the Roughan area.

Gardai were called to the scene and have confirmed that a man in his 60s was subsequently arrested.

The man is currently being detained at Letterkenny Garda Station for questioning.
Gardai say that no injuries were reported during the course of this incident.

Investigations are ongoing.

National audit of CAMHS to be carried out

The Taoiseach’s confirmed a nationwide audit of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services will take place.

It’s in the wake of a review showing 227 children were exposed to the ‘risk’ of significant harm at a HSE run service in South Kerry.

46 children suffered significant harm.

Over 1,300 files were reviewed after concerns were raised about the care provided by a junior doctor between 2016 and 2020.

Eastwood calls for Army apology 50 years after Bloody Sunday

 

The House of Commons has been told that Bloody Sunday marked the start of what was to be the most brutal year of the troubles.

This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of the killing of 14 unarmed civilians during a civil rights march in Derry’s Bogside.

Business Matters Ep 76 – Denis Ferry & Leslie O’Donnell

On this week’s Business Matters, Ciaran O’Donnell is joined by Denis Ferry, owner of Ferry’s Garage, and Leslie O’Donnell, owner of O’Donnell Crash Repairs, whose units are located at Lisnennan in Letterkenny.

Both left school at the age of 14 and became close friends when Denis set up his garage at the Pinehill Industrial Estate across from Leslie’s unit in 2001.

Denis and Leslie were part of the team behind Noah’s Bed Push back in August which raised almost a quarter of a million euro for nine beneficiaries chosen by the Gooch Family.

The pair have become known as Donegal’s Ice Road Trekkers because of their high-profile road trips to different parts of the world.

Fisher & Devine head Galway Rally entry

The who’s who of the Irish Rallying circuit are on the entry list for the much anticipated Galway International Rally which sees the return of the Irish Tarmac Championship in 2022.

The top seeds are Alaister Fisher and Gordan Noble in a VW Polo with the Fiesta of Callum Devine and Brian Hoy next on the list.

Donegal’s Donagh Kelly and Declan Boyle are at 8 and 9 with Gary Jennings at 10.

Kevin Eves in his Toyota heads the modified two wheel drive category followed by the likes of Gary Kiernan, Damien Tourish and Declan Gallagher

The Galway International Rally reverts back to a two day event and runs over the weekend of the 5th and 6th Febuary.

Fresh appeal over mystery body found on beach

 

There’s a fresh appeal for information over a body that washed up on a north west beach in the mid-80s.

The body of a man was found on Tullaghan Strand near Bundoran in 1986 however despite best efforts by Gardai, the man has not yet been identified.

The deceased had a number of tattoos leading to the belief that he was Irish.

His remains were exhumed last year for further analysis.

‘Women of Honour’ to meet Taoiseach next week

The Women of Honour group is to meet with Taoiseach Michael Martin next week.

The group of former Defence Forces members, who are alleging sexual abuse, harassment and discrimination, met Simon Coveney yesterday.

However, they walked out of the talks after an hour, after it became clear that despite their demand for an inquiry with statutory powers to compel witnesses, Minister Coveney had already signed off on a judge led internal review.

Man due to be sentenced next week over Glenties shooting rampage

 

A man is due to be sentenced next week over a shooting rampage in Glenties.

Stephen Dowling of Burren Road, Carlow was visiting Glenties when he let off up to 9 shots of ammunition from a high-powered telescopic rifle in the early hours of February 22nd, 2020.

The 24-year-old appeared at Letterkenny Circuit Court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to a range of charges from the night in question which was described as ‘wild west actions’ in court.

Judge John Aylmer adjourned the case for final sentencing next Tuesday.

54 people awaiting admission to LUH

 

The number of people awaiting admission to Letterkenny University Hospital has jumped again.

54 people were awaiting admission to the hospital this morning 16 on trolleys in its Emergency Department while a further 38 were waiting on wards.

It’s the second most overcrowded hospital nationwide today.

The number waiting has risen by 37 compared with yesterday’s figure of 17.

Nationally, there were 549 patients waiting at hospitals across the country today with 111 people waiting at University Hospital Limerick – the second day in a row where a national record has been broken by the hospital.

Difficult times ahead if farmer concerns on public access not addressed

 

There’s a warning of a very difficult summer if farmers concerns around public access and hillwalking are not addressed.

There’s been a big increase in the number of people accessing local hills however this in turn has led to a jump in the number of farmers making complaints to The Irish Natura & Hill Farmers Association.

Complaints include dog attacks and the blocking of gateways and access routes through illegal parking.

Instances have also been reported of verbal abuse towards farmers when walkers were challenged as a result of disobeying signs.
