Residents in south west Donegal hit by water outage

 

Some residents in south west Donegal have been hit by a water outage this afternoon.

A burst pipe which facilitates the main water supply may cause disruption to those living in Fintra, Largy and Killybegs.

Irish Water has confirmed that repair works are scheduled to take place until 6pm today.

Customers are advised to allow 2-3 hours after the estimated restoration time for their supply to fully return.

CCTV and drones could be used to tackle illegal dumping

CCTV and drones could be used by local authorities to catch and prosecute illegal dumpers.

Fianna Fáil is introducing a bill in the Seanad to address the problem, which it says is costing councils around a hundred million euro a year.

But Liam Herrick, Director of the Irish Council of Civil Liberties, says they’ve already seen what happens when local authorities use the technology incorrectly:

NI Economy Minister urged to support E&I Campsie expansion

The Stormont Assembly has been told that a major expansion at E&I Engineering’s Campsie plant in Derry could be jeapordised because the company cannot get adequate guarantees regarding access to the Assured Skills programme.

In the chamber, Foyle MLA urged Economy Minister Gordon Lyons to meet with the company’s Chief Executive as quickly as possible…………

Drop in those awaiting admission to LUH

 

There ‘s been a dramatic drop in those awaiting admission to Letterkenny University Hospital.

As of this morning there were 17 people waiting for a bed at the hospital compared with 58 waiting there yesterday – a decrease of 41.

Meanwhile, according to the INMO’s daily Trolley Watch figures, 97 patients were awaiting admission to University Hospital Limerick, the highest number recorded in any Irish hospital since the union began compiling trolley figures.

Weekend crimes could be linked

 

Gardai believe two weekend crimes in Letterkenny could be linked.

A car dealership has been targetted while items were stolen from a shop –  both located in the Mountaintop area of the town – in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The yard of a car dealership in the area was entered on Saturday morning last between 3am and 4am with damage caused to a number of vehicles within.

Meanwhile a gang of youths are wanted in connection with a weekend shop theft also in the Mountaintop area.

On Saturday morning, shortly after 5.35am the alarm at the business premises was activated.

Gardaí attended the scene and discovered a small window open at the front of the premises.

CCTV was viewed and three male youths were captured on it – one of the youths had reached in the window, which had been left ajar and stole a packet of batteries.

The three in question then ran from the scene.

Two of the males were wearing dark clothing and the third was wearing a grey tracksuit and a white
baseball cap.

Entry was not gained to the shop.

Gardai are appealing to anybody who may have been travelling in the area of Mountaintop between those times and who had a dashcam, to make the footage available to them.

Gardai investigating car fires

 

Gardai are treating a recent car fire in Letterkenny as deliberate.

The car fire happened at the Green Ballymacool on Thursday last at around 1.30am.

A resident in the estate woke when they heard a loud noise outside only to discover that their car was on fire.

It is believed that the fire was started deliberately.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact Gardai in Letterkenny.

Meanwhile, Gardai in Buncrana are investigating a similar type of crime.

The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning at around 1am at Ard Na Guala Duibhe, Moville.

A 999 call was received in relation to a car that was on fire at an address at that location.

Gardaí and the fire services attended the scene. The fire is believed to have been started deliberately.

Gardai are asking anybody who may have observed any suspicious activity in that area to contact them in Buncrana.

Male wanted over attempted theft at Letterkenny business premises

 

An investigation is continuing into an attempted break-in and theft at a business premises in Letterkenny.

The incident happened in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The business premises is close to the junction of the Canal road and the Pearse Road area of the town.
At around 00.25am yesterday morning, the gate to a yard was forced open and it is believed that an attempt was made to steal a Jeep from the yard by ramming the gate.
The attempt was unsuccessful however and no property was stolen. CCTV has and will continue to be examined.

Gardai have footage of a young male in dark clothing with a fur hood on his coat and he travelled on foot from the Pearse Rd from the Station Roundabout direction into the premises and left a short time later, again in the direction of the Pearse Rd.

A number of Taxi’s were to be seen on the CCTV around the time and Gardai are appealing in particular to those drivers to make their dashcam footage available to them.

If anybody observed the male in the area or if they have any information that might assist with our investigation we ask them to contact Letterkenny Garda Station.

The draw for the quarter-finals of the North West of Ulster Intermediate Cup was conducted in Newbuildings on Monday evening.

Monaghan United v Strabane Athletic

Ardstraw FC v Cockhill Celtic

Bonagee United v Newbuildings United

The ties are scheduled to take place on February 12 next.

No Ruane for Mayo with Water Break to be ditched

The National Football League gets underway for Donegal this Sunday when they take on Mayo in their Division 1 opener at Markievicz Park in Sligo.

The game will be LIVE on Highland, full match commentary with Oisin Kelly and Martin McHugh.

Mayo’s All Star midfielder Matthew Ruane will be unavailable for the game and will miss the two opening games in the National Leagues.

The two game suspension was handed out from the Breaffy clubman’s sending off late in the All-Ireland final against Tyrone.

The sending off came about after an altercation with Tyrone’s Con Kilpatrick.

And Ahead of the game, it looks like the water break will be ditched.

With the lifting of the restrictions it’s expected the GAA will do away with the water break which was brought in as sport returned after the first wave of the pandemic.

It reverts back to two Maor Uisce on the sideline.
