Emergency support being provided to hauliers

 

18 million euro in emergency support is being provided to hauliers.

A temporary grant scheme is being set up which will provide 100 euro per week for heavy goods vehicles over a certain weight.

The scheme will operate for a period of eight weeks and will then be reviewed.

Announcing the move, Minister Eamon Ryan said the haulage sector is critically important to Ireland national and international supply chains.

Accommodating refugees will ‘begin with school community’

 

A Donegal Deputy believes that accommodating Ukrainian refugees here will begin with the school community.

A number of primary schools in Donegal have already written to the Education Minister highlighting their willingness to help young Ukrainians arriving to the county.

It’s estimated that around 100,000 refugees will be housed nationwide.

Survivors of historical institutional abuse hear public apologies

Politicians in Northern Ireland have been publicly apologising to survivors of historical institutional abuse.

It’s five years since a public inquiry found shocking levels of mistreatment at 22 children’s homes between 1922 and 1995.

Minister joins criticism of potential price gouging on fuel

 

EU leaders have been meeting today to discuss European security and the fuel crisis caused by the war in Ukraine.

The Taoiseach is in Versailles for the informal EU summit before he heads to London later.

Micheál Martin wants more flexibility on the tax on fuel in the hopes something can be done to cut VAT on petrol and diesel.

Finance Minister and President of the Eurogroup Paschal Donohoe has also joined criticism of potential price gouging on fuel:

Meanwhile the AA says fuel prices have dropped by around 20 cent at many petrol stations in the last 24 hours after the government cut excise duty on petrol and diesel.

Based on a survey at 15 forecourts nationwide, many are selling petrol for around 1.80 a litre and diesel for less than 2 euro.

UCD V Derry City Postponed

This evenings League of Ireland Premier Division clash between UCD and Derrry has been postponed.

The pitch at Belfield in Dublin is waterlogged and deemed unplayable after a pitch inspection.

Harps are hoping they can make home advantage count and take a first league win of the season.

Inishowen Cllr calls for more supports for farmers

An Inishowen Cllr is calling for more supports for farmers if they are to proceed with the Governments crop growing plans.

Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue is asking farmers to plant more grains as the invasion of Ukraine has sparked fears about food security in Europe as both it and Russia are major exporters.

But Cllr Johnny McGuinness says a lot of farmers many not be able to afford to follow through on the plan due to the rising costs of equipment and fuel.

Police concerned for welfare of teenager missing from Derry

Police in Derry say they are becoming increasingly concerned for the welfare and safety of 17-year-old Patrick Crumlish who is missing from the area.

He was last seen yesterday afternoon at around 1:45pm in the Northland Road area of the city. He was wearing a grey-coloured tracksuit and black trainers

Patrick is described as 5’8” in height, of a medium build and with short black hair shaved at the top and sides.

Anyone who has seen the teenager or has any information on his whereabouts is asked to contact Police on 101.

Fire service provision in Letterkenny on knife edge – Cllr McMonagle

It’s been claimed that fire service provision in Letterkenny is on a knife edge.

Councillor Gerry McMonagle raised concerns at the latest meeting of Donegal County Council’s Economic Development SPC over adequate provision of fire service personnel in Letterkenny.

It’s believed that there are currently 15 personnel attached to the station with the full complement not available at all times.

Councillor McMonagle says issues around recruitment need to be addressed to relieve the pressures facing the service:
