10,600 new ROI Covid-19 cases today

The Department of Health has confirmed a total of 10,600 new cases of Covid-19 in the Republic of Ireland today.

6,689 cases of Covid 19 were confirmed through PCR tests – while a further 3,911 people registered a positive antigen test online.

The number of Covid patients being treated for Covid 19 in ICU has now fallen to its lowest level since the 8th of November, with 78 patients in intensive care for the virus today.

Overall, there are 836 patients receiving treatment for the disease in the nation’s hospitals.

It also represents a significant drop of 21 percent on the recent peak of 1,063 Covid hospitalisations on January 10th.

“Interest and enthusiasm” shown by public as rail review consultation ends

People across the Island have expressed ‘interest and enthusiasm’ in a public consultation about an All Island Rail Review.

That’s according to the North’s Infrastructure Minister, who says about 3,500 responses have been gathered from both sides of the border, as the public consultation period on the review ended yesterday.

The review will now examine the current railway system, opportunities for more connections, links to ports and airports as well as potentially using trains for freight.

One of the proposals to be considered under the review would be the restoration of a rail network within County Donegal, linking Donegal to the rest of Ireland’s rail network.

Nichola Mallon, the North’s Minister for Infrastructure says the joint venture between her team and the Department of Transport in Dublin should be complete in 12 months, and will allow both Governments to make informed decisions regarding new rail infrastructure projects North and South…

Three men hospitalised following multi-car crash in Letterkenny

Gardaí say three people were hospitalised after a multi-vehicle crash at the Killylastin Junction in Letterkenny yesterday evening.

They say the accident occurred at approximately 9pm yesterday evening, with a man aged in his late teens and two other men in their twenties requiring hospital treatment following the incident – but according to local reports it’s believed their injuries were not serious.

The road at Killylastin is open again to the public this morning following the crash.

Fall in Covid hospitalisations at LUH, nationally today

The number of Covid patients at Letterkenny University Hospital has fallen as of the latest figures.

As of 8pm yesterday Evening, there were 39 admitted patients with the virus at LUH, a drop of 5 compared to the previous day.

Nationally the number of people being treated for Covid 19 in Irish hospitals has fallen for the fifth day in a row.

Today 836 patients are in hospitals with the virus, a drop of 56 on yesterday.

It represents a significant reduction of 21 percent on the recent peak of 1,063 Covid hospitalisations on January 10th.

Meanwhile 88 patients are currently being treated nationally in ICUs for the disease.

Easing of restrictions marks a “day of hope” – Varadkar

The Tánaiste has claimed that today is the beginning of the end of the Covid pandemic.

As of this morning there’s no requirement for social distancing, restrictions on hospitality have lifted and there are no caps on gatherings in the home.

Live events can go ahead at full capacity, with Minister Catherine Martin confirming there will be a St Patrick’s Day parade this year.

Health officials say there will be a rise in Covid cases as a result of the reopening but believe it can be managed.

Deputy Pringle: National Maternity Hospital site must be state-owned

A Donegal Deputy is calling for the compulsory purchase of the site for the new National Maternity Hospital site as soon as possible.

There are questions as to why the State would invest €800 million of public money into the new hospital and not establish ownership.

Despite a motion being brought forward to the Dail on the issue this week, the Government says that it has not changed its position and does not intend to purchase the site.

Donegal house prices will continue rapid rise in 2022 – Independent

Residential property prices in Donegal rose by 12% last year, one of the higher rises in the country according to an analysis carried out by the Irish Independent.

The paper says prices will continue to rise in 2022, particularly in Letterkenny as LYIT attains technological university status.

Calls renewed to protect Sligo-based Rescue 118

A South Donegal Deputy is pushing for guarantees from government that the Rescue 118 Search and Rescue helicopter will continue to be based at Sligo Airport.

Currently there are four SAR bases, Sligo, Shannon, Waterford and Dublin, but a new pre-tender document published by the Government recently states that it requires “at least three bases” nationally.

In the Dail this week, Deputy Marian Harkin pressed Tánaiste Leo Varadkar to give a commitment that Sligo would retain the service.

Taoiseach confirms the lifting of most restrictions from 6am tomorrow

“There is a lot to do, but today is a good day”

The words of Taoiseach Michael Martin this evening as he confirmed the lifting of most restrictions from 6am tomorrow morning.

The requirement for social distancing will be scrapped along with all restrictions on the hospitality sector. Attendance caps at indoor and outdoor events will be also be lifted tomorrow.

Nightclubs can open this weekend while digital Covid certs won’t be needed to gain access to anything but international travel.

A phased return to the workplace will start on Monday.

The requirement for mask wearing in certain settings is being kept until the end of February as will Covid mitigation measures in schools.

11,161 new Covid cases confirmed in ROI

11,161 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed this evening.

The figure includes 6,597 positive PCR tests, and 4,564 positive antigen tests logged on the HSE portal yesterday.

892 Covid patients are in hospital, down four from yesterday, while the ICU figure is down two, to 88.

Latest figures for Letterkenny University Hospital show 44 infected patients, three of them in intensive care.
