Fórsa SFPA authority members at Killybegs engage in work stoppage

Operations at Killybegs harbour will be disrupted this evening as Fórsa members at the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority take part in a 24 hour work stoppage from midnight.

The action, by 110 inspectors and clerical staff, will affect operations at six sea fishery harbours across the country, including Killybegs.

The action is in response to what Fórsa says is a decision by SFPA management to implement and impose 47 recommendations from an independent review of SFPA without the input of the staff representatives .

Planned industrial action in March 2021 was suspended, and meetings took place as part of a Workplace Relations Commission reconciliation process in March, April and May 2021 without resolution.

The SFPA has sought a commencement of a new industrial relations process, which the union says is an attempt by management to frustrate the state industrial relation resolution process it had previously committed to.

A 24-hour work stoppage by all Fórsa members commencing from midnight Wednesday 19th January to Thursday midnight 20th January

A 48-hour work stoppage by all Fórsa members from midnight Tuesday 25th January to midnight Thursday 27th January.

Taoiseach urged to debate Greenwich report

The Taoiseach has been urged to look at what is known as person K in a report by the Police Ombudsman of Northern Ireland which identified collusive behaviours in 19 murders and multiple attempted murders in the North West between 1989 and 1993, including the murder of Eddie Fullerton.

Among a number of significant findings relating to the death of Mr Fullerton who was shot dead at his home in Buncrana in 1991 there was found to be no record that intelligence requests from Gardai conducting the murder investigation between June 1991 and January 1993 were responded to by RUC Special Branch. That included a request for information on person K.

Person K has been arrested a number of times in connection with the murder of the Donegal County Councillor but on all occasions has been released without charge.

Speaking in the Dail, Donegal Deputy Padraig MacLochlainn called on Micheal Martin to hold a debate centered on the issue:

Plans to allow NI politicians double-job to be scrapped

Plans to allow Northern Ireland politicians to double-job are to be scrapped.

It would have allowed MPs to be elected as MLAs in May’s Stormont elections, and hold both positions until the next Westminster election.

The amendment was due to be debated in the House of Lords this afternoon.

But British Prime Minister Boris Johnson ruled out the plan, when questioned by Conservative MP, Simon Hoare, today:

Business Matters Ep 75 – Seamus McDaid & Bairbre Uí Chathail

On this week’s Business Matters, Ciaran O’Donnell talks to the Managing Director of McDaid’s Football Special in Ramelton, Seamus McDaid.

The fourth generation to head up the well-known Donegal company, Seamus headed to Australia as a 20-year-old to work as an Australian Rules agent. A year later, he moved to New York for what was supposed to be just a summer – but his stay in the Big Apple lasted eight years. Seamus came back home in March 2019 and succeeded his father, Edward, at the helm of the family business which sells soft drinks and ice cream.

Ciaran also speaks to Irish Language Development Officer with Líonra Leitir Ceanainn, Bairbre Uí Chathail, about the Letterkenny launch of Gradaim – the Irish business awards scheme designed to increase the visibility of Irish and encourage its use in business – which takes place on Tuesday, January 25th.
