Police operation ongoing in Derry

A police operation is ongoing this morning in the Galliagh Park area of Derry.

It’s understood that the operation is centred on a white van parked in the residential area.

The security alert follows a report of a hijacking in the nearby Bracken Park area of the Galliagh estate last night.

A number of homes were evacuated in the early hours of this morning with residents being housed Templemore Sports Complex.

People urged to support rural businesses in special initiative

 

People in Donegal are being encouraged to support rural businesses in a special initiative running today.

Digi2market is running a social media campaign throughout the day with people being asked to use the hashtag #ruralbusiness as part of the content they post.

The campaign aims to spread awareness about the people, services, and products behind rural businesses in the county and elsewhere.

Today’s return of the Dail will be dominated by statements on ending violence against women.

Sinn Fein has brought the motion in the wake of the murder of Ashling Murphy in Co. Offaly.

TD’s will also debate legislation to allow adopted people access their birth records.

Crucial meeting on Leaving Cert fate tomorrow

 

A crucial meeting aimed at bringing certainty to the Leaving Certificate examination is expected to take place tomorrow.

The State Exams Advisory Group will hear the views of representative bodies and consider the most appropriate arrangements.

The Minister for Education has been coming under pressure to replace the traditional examination model with a hybrid version similar to last year.

Labour’s spokesperson on Education Aodhán Ó Ríordáin is hopeful a decision will be made this week.

Council launches consultation on new Outdoor recreation Strategy

Donegal County Council has launched a series of online public consultation workshops aimed at gathering the public’s views on the first ever Outdoor Recreation Strategy for the county.

The Outdoor Recreation Strategy for Donegal will examine how outdoor recreation can be sustainably developed and managed over the next 5 years, while preserving the county’s unique land and waterscape.

The council’s Chief Executive John G. McLaughlin says the strategy will provide a mechanism for the delivery and implementation of the vision for the future development of Outdoor Recreation in Donegal, and establish a defined framework for doing so.

It will identify existing assets, and suggest what future improvements and new developments are necessary to consolidate and enhance what the county has to offer.

A full audit of current provision will take place in the first instance, and the Leader funded strategy will be focussed on actions over the next five years, with an overall vision to 2040.

The council and its consultants are hosting online consultation events in each municipal district between January 31st and February 9th to gather the views of local people in relation to the quality of current provision, and future opportunities for improving outdoor recreation in the county.

Council told to keep dogs off Blue Flag beaches

 

Local authorities in all coastal counties have been told they must keep dogs off their their Blue Flag beaches if they want to maintain the coveted international award.

Dogs, apart from assistance dogs, are already banned from the country’s 93 Blue Flag bathing areas under the strict criteria set down by the Foundation for Environmental Education, which issues the awards.

However An Taisce’s been advised by the F.E.E that it must advise local councils in all coastal counties that they have to ensure the Blue Flag beaches are kept canine free if they are to keep their flags.

Man remains in Garda custody over Ashling Murphy murder

 

A man in his 30s remains in Garda custody this morning over the murder of Ashling Murphy.

He was arrested at a Dublin hospital yesterday, where he was being treated for a number of injuries.

Gardai investigating the 23-year-old’s death arrested the man on suspicion of the murder at St. James’ Hospital yesterday.

He was being treated there since last Thursday for self-inflicted stab wounds and other injuries.

The man, who’s in his 30s, was taken to Tullamore Garda Station, where he could be held for 24 hours.

His period of detention’s due to expire later today.

Ashling Murphy was killed while out for a run along the Grand Canal near Tullamore in Co. Offaly last Wednesday.

Her funeral took place yesterday – the President and Taoiseach were among those who paid their respects.

Meanwhile Gardai continue to appeal for information on the murder, including about a man in a black tracksuit and runners who’s believed to have been in the Grand Canal area around the time of her death.

Donegal will get one more game before the league opener against Mayo on Sunday week.

This Saturday Donegal will face Monaghan in the Dr McKenna Cup final having come through their semi final on Tuesday evening beating Derry 2-9 to 0-11.

Buncrana’s Caolan McGonagle was man of the match, hitting 1-2 from midfield.

Rory Gallagher – McKenna Cup good for new Derry crop

Derry boss Rory Gallagher isn’t to worried about not making the Dr McKenna Cup Final but feels it was important for the younger players in the group to experience senior football game time.

The Oak Leaf county lost 2-9 to 0-11 at the hands of Donegal in Tuesday nights semi final.

Derry will have a host of players to return ahead of the league opener with Down but manager Rory Gallagher says the competition was a good work out to give players a chance.

Watch: Declan Bonner happy with another game

Donegal will face Monaghan in the Dr McKenna Cup Final on Saturday with both counties getting another game under their belt before the league starts.

That game will be played out at Healy Park in Omagh starting at 5pm.

Donegal disposed of Derry 2-9 to 0-11 in Tuesday’s semi final in Ballybofey while Monaghan beat Armagh 5-4 on penalties to reach the decider.

Goals from Man of the Match Caolan McGonagle and Odhran McFadden Ferry had Donegal on course for the final by half time.
