The Health Minister says he wants Covid restrictions lifted at the earliest possible opportunity.

Stephen Donnelly said he wouldn’t speculate on what NPHET will decide after its meeting on Thursday.

There’s hope in Government health officials will recommend an easing of restrictions around hospitality and live events.

Further pressure on HSE to publish Brandon report in full

A Donegal Deputy doesn’t believe any disciplinary action will take place unless the full Brandon report is published:

There’s increasing pressure on the HSE to publish the report in full, despite new advice from the Attorney General.

It’s understood Paul Gallagher has advised against full publication due to the potential of prejudicing any HR disciplinary actions.

A summary published last month detailed how a resident at the HSE-run St Joseph’s Hospital in Stranorlar carried out sexual assaults on other residents over 13 years.

Breastcheck urged to begin recruitment campaign

 

The Chairperson for Donegal Action for Cancer Care is calling on Breastcheck to begin a recruitment campaign as a matter of urgency.

The call comes as screening appointments are currently delayed by up to a year .

Screening services were paused for a number of months at the start of the pandemic, but according to the Irish Times women who were due to be screened in 2021, should be seen this year.

A spokesperson says that ‘urgent patients who had symptoms’ were seen quicker.

Final decision on Leaving Cert format next week

 

A final decision on the format for this year’s Leaving Cert will be made next week, according to a junior minister.

A survey of students found over two thirds want a combination of accredited grades or the option of sitting the exams.

At present, the Leaving Cert is due to return to the old model in place before the pandemic.

Junior Minister for Higher Education, Niall Collins, says a final decision will be made by the end of the month.

40 new jobs are on way to North West

40 new jobs are on the way to the North West.

Advantio has announced the establishment of its European Cybersecurity HQ in Sligo, with the creation of approximately 40 jobs over the next three years.

Established in 2009, Advantio is one of Europe’s leading privately owned Cybersecurity firms and is the Cybersecurity Partner of choice to the leading top fintech companies and payment service providers across Europe.

It will be recruiting for full-time roles across a range of functions including Product Management, Security Consulting, Project Management, Customer Success and HR teams.

The project is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.

A summary published last month detailed how a resident at the HSE-run Ard Greine Complex and Sean O’Hare Unit in Stranorlar carried out sexual assaults on other residents over 13 years.

Over 240 Gardai injured on duty last year

 

243 gardai were injured after being assaulted on duty last year.

According to freedom of information figures, it’s a 9 per cent increase on 2020.

22 of last year’s attacks led to bone fractures or dislocations, and 15 gardai got open wounds.

Dave Conroy, from the Garda Representative Association, says some of the assaults were even more serious.

Donegal and Derry will face off for a place in the semi final of the Dr McKenna Cup on Tuesday evening in Ballybofey.

Planned extension for Donegal school moves to next stage

 

A long awaited extension at Scoil Naomh Colmcille at Drumoghill, Manorcunningham has received approval to proceed to tender under the Additional School Accommodation Scheme.

The project will consist of one new classroom, and one new Special Education room.

Minister Charlie McConalogue says it’s a positive announcement, and praised the principal, staff, students and parents for their efforts to progress the project.

The Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council says a new website launched to promote arts and culture in the North West is proof that Donegal, Derry and Tyrone are stronger when they work together.

Cllr Jack Murray was speaking after the launch of happydaysnw.com, a website primarily aimed at engaging more families with arts and culture.

It s part of the ongoing, cross border, North West Audience Development Project.

‘Happy Days’ Online Guide to North West’s Best Experiences Goes Live

A new website listing arts and cultural events in the North West has been launched to provide a one-stop guide to the best family fun experiences in Derry, Strabane and Donegal.

The www.happydaysnw.com website, which covers the entire spectrum of arts and culture events and experiences across the region, is a joint initiative by Donegal County Council and Derry City and Strabane District Council.  The initiative, which is primarily aimed at engaging more families with arts and culture, is supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, and is part of the ongoing, cross border, North West Audience Development Project, supported by the North West Strategic Development Fund.

The comprehensive ‘What’s On’ guide involves partnerships with hundreds of cultural partners across the North West. These include visitor centres, theatres, arts centres, entertainment venues, festival organisers and experience providers offering great family days out, ranging from unique and exciting instead adventures to more relaxing cultural activities. The initiative also fosters and encourages public engagement and participation with cultural partners through social media channels.

Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Councillor Jack Murray, said: “Our region offers among the best family-orientated arts and culture experiences available anywhere and happydaysnw.com gives everyone the opportunity to quickly find and explore the information needed to plan their perfect family day out.

“The Happy Days initiative is yet another example of the strong partnership approach that exists between our two local authorities and will play an important role in engaging many more families with our rich arts and culture scene.”

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Graham Warke, said the new initiative is designed to “simplify the planning of great family days out in the North West”.

“I’m delighted to launch this initiative which gives people instant access to the many fantastic arts and cultural events and experiences our region has to offer – all in a single online hub. The North West has a very rich calendar of arts and cultural events, boasts a great many wonderful destinations and offers some of the most fun-filled experiences on these islands.

“Happydaysnw.com brings all of these and more together in an online listing that makes discovering, planning, and enjoying family days out simple and convenient for all.”

Sharon Meenan, Arts and Culture Officer at Derry City and Strabane District Council, said: “Supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s Challenge Fund, this initiative is part of the NW Audience Development Plan and is designed to enable everyone to easily access information about arts and culture in the North West.

“By providing all the practical information on one website, it’s easier for families to find out about cultural activities near them, connect with like-minded people online and plan their special days out across the Derry-Londonderry, Strabane, and Donegal areas.
