Road remains closed following crash in south Donegal

 

The road on the N15 between Laghey and Ballintra remains closed this morning following a serious two vehicle collision yesterday evening.

The crash, involving a car and an articulated lorry, occurred at 4.10pm.

Two people were taken to Sligo University Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Investigations are ongoing.

Diversions are in place at Laghey and Ballintra.

Funeral of Ashling Murphy taking place this morning

 

The funeral of murdered school teacher Ashling Murphy is taking place in Co Offaly this morning.

It’s being held in Mountbolus at 11 o’clock – when schools across Ireland will also hold a minute’s silence.

The 23-year-old was killed while running along the Grand Canal, near Tullamore, last Wednesday afternoon.

Micheál Cunningham’s 22-year-old daughter, Ciara Campbell, was murdered in Co Carlow in 2007.

He says there are similarities between the two cases.

Major delays in Breastcheck screening appointments

Breastcheck screening appointments are currently delayed by up to a year .

Screening services were paused for a number of months at the start of the pandemic, but according to the Irish Times women who were due to be screened in 2021, should be seen this year.

A spokesperson says that ‘urgent patients who had symptoms’ were seen quicker.

Two people injured in Laghey RTC – road to remain closed overnight

Two people remain in hospital this evening following a serious two vehicle collision on the N15 between Laghey and Ballintra.

The crash, involving a car and an articulated lorry, occurred at 4.10pm.

Two people were taken to Sligo University Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Investigations are ongoing.

The road is expected to remain closed overnight with diversions at Laghey and Ballintra.

11,139 new Covid cases confirmed

A further 11,139 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed.

It’s the lowest daily number of cases reported in almost three weeks.

6,329 cases were detected by PCR tests, and 4,810 were positive antigen tests registered on the HSE portal.

There are 1,006 Covid patients in hospital, 97 of them in ICU.

The Tánaiste has said he can’t give a date for when Covid restrictions will be lifted.

Leo Varadkar has said he’s in favour of a phased re-opening but at a faster pace than we’ve seen in previous years.

NPHET will meet on Thursday to consider the current spread of Covid and advise Government on how to manage the re-opening.

The Restaurants’ Association of Ireland has called for a return to normal trading hours for its members.

The group has said the reversal of Covid restrictions should happen on Thursday after NPHET meets.

CEO of the RAI Adrian Cummins said the 8pm closing time is effectively a lockdown for hospitality.

Two serious road collisions in Donegal

A woman’s been airlifted to hospital this afternoon following a road collision in Dunfanaghy this afternoon.

A car and tractor collided and the female driver of the car, who is in her 50’s, was airlifted to Letterkenny University Hospital with serious injuries. The male driver of the tractor received medical attention at the scene.

Garda investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, a section of the the N15 between Donegal Town and Ballyshannon is closed following what gardai are describing as a serious road collision this afternoon.

The road is closed between Key’s of Laghey and the Ballintra junction, and will remain closed for the night.

British government is ‘interfering’ in Stormont election – SF

The British Government’s been accused of interfering in the North’s assembly elections, due to be held in May.

It emerged over the weekend there are plans for the return of the dual mandate

That would allow MPs to also hold seats in the Stormont Assembly.

The move is opposed by every party except the DUP.

Deputy First Minister, Sinn Fein’s Michelle O’Neill says the move seems designed to boost the largest unionist party…………
