Most Leaving Cert students want hybrid exam this year

68 per cent of Leaving Cert students want a hybrid exam this year.

A survey of nearly 19,000 students, by the Irish Second Level Students’ Union, shows students are concerned about missing classes, and the effect the current situation is having on their mental health.

This year’s Leaving Cert is due to return to the old model in place before the pandemic.

A hybrid format would involve students offered accredited grades or the option of sitting an exam.

Donegal County Council is being urged to explore the idea of installing infrastructure on Donegal’s popular beaches which would aid people with a disability access the water.

The Council is being asked to consult with the relevant groups and agencies in the county with a view towards having the amenity at a number of the county’s beaches.

Cllr Michael Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig says it would be a worthwhile initiative and something that the local authority could take the lead on:

Measures being considered to house Mica victims

It’s emerged that more homeowners affected by Mica are considering converting their garage as a living space while they await the long awaited redress scheme to be finalised.

Pressure on the rental market is a contributing factor with only one property said to be currently available to rent in Inishowen.

A number of other measures are also being considered in a bid to house those affected while repair works to their homes are being carried out.

Speaking on social media, PRO of the Mica Action Group Michael Doherty says it’s regrettable that homeowners themselves have to come with these kind of plans:

No Tyrone return for Mark Bradley

Mark Bradley has quit the Tyrone squad, bringing to an end a seven-year inter-county career.

The attacker is the latest member of the All-Ireland winning squad to step away from the set-up.

Last week three Tyrone players – attacker Ronan O’Neill and defenders Hugh Pat McGeary and Michael Cassidy – decided to opt out for the season ahead.

Like Bradley, they had managed little game time last season in the county’s run to a fourth Sam Maguire Cup title.

Bradley was a member of the Tyrone team which won the All-Ireland U21 title in 2015, the same year he made his senior debut.

He will continue to play for his club, Killyclogher.

Tyrone were eliminated from the Dr McKenna Cup at the weekend after losing at home to Armagh, and will have no further competitive games ahead of their NFL Division One opener against Monaghan on January 30.

Criticism of suggestions restrictions will be lifted on phased basis

A south Donegal Deputy has criticised suggestions that covid restrictions here will be lifted on a phased basis.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has said the aim is to have all restrictions lifted by the end of this year, but it shouldn’t be done at a ‘risky or reckless pace’.

However Independent TD and Deputy Marc MacSharry says that while NPHET has been doing its ‘best’, there needs to be a clearer breakdown of who is now at the biggest risk from covid, so that we can reopen society as quickly as possible:

There have been calls for a number of bridges to be repaired as a matter of urgency, on the road between Glenswilly to Meenaroy, after noticeable damage, as well as a number of collisions are said to have occurred on them.

Local Councillor Donal “Mandy” Kelly says that there are several bridges with issues in the area, including one bridge which has began eroding, and another which has proven to be accident-prone.

Cllr Kelly says that while the Council has provided assurances the bridges are towards the top of their list for inspection and repair, these fixes need to come sooner rather than later…
