New close contact and testing rules come into force

New rules around close contacts and testing come into effect today.

Among the changes, people who’ve had a booster and don’t have symptoms no longer need to self-isolate.

These new recommendations mean asymptomatic close contacts who’ve been boosted no longer need to stay at home, but instead are asked to take regular antigen tests and wear medical grade face masks when out in public, for 10 days.

Close contacts who have not received a booster vaccine will have to restrict their movements for seven days – while those who contract Covid 19 will now have to isolate for seven, rather than 10 days.

Also from today people who test positive on an antigen test can upload their result and list their close contacts through the HSE’s website.

The HSE says in order to ensure misuse is limited, anyone wishing to obtain a recovery cert will need to get a PCR test or professionally administered antigen test.

Renewed calls for ‘Blueway’ to be developed in South Donegal

The Donegal Municipal District has heard renewed calls for the area of Donegal Bay, consisting of towns such as Bundoran, Ballyshannon, Donegal Town and Killybegs, to be designated as a “Blueway” for tourists.

Councillor Niamh Kennedy believes the facilities, resources and activities are already in place to market the Bay as a whole as a tourism destination, along with the Wild Atlantic Way.

Cllr Kennedy says promoting the Donegal Bay as a Blueway should be a “no-brainer”:

Long-awaited resurfacing works to be carried out in Letterkenny

The Cathaoirleach of the Letterkenny Milford Municipal District has welcomed the news that several lanes in the Letterkenny area will be resurfaced in the coming year.

Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh says that the lanes have never been resurfaced, either by the old Letterkenny Town Council, or Donegal County Council – and now they are in urgent need of repairs.

The lanes at Oakfield Terrace, Muckish Avenue and Slieve Sneacht have been allocated funding for resurfacing, and Cllr Kavanagh says it’s important works are scheduled as soon as possible:

Ombudsman identifies collusive behaviour in Fullerton murder

The Police Ombudsman of Northern Ireland has identified collusive behaviours in 19 murders and multiple attempted murders in the North West between 1989 and 1993 including the killing of Donegal County Councillor Eddie Fullerton.

Mrs Marie Anderson has also raised significant concerns about police conduct.

She says concerns of collusive behaviours raised by the family of Eddie Fullerton who was shot dead at his home in Buncrana in 1991 were legitimate and justified.

The Police Ombudsman says there was a failure to warn a number of individuals of threats to their lives and an inadequate response to a growing threat posed by the North West UDA/ UFF.

She highlighted also intelligence and surveillance failings which led to the arming of the loyalist group with military assault rifles as well as the failure by police to address UDR officers passing information to loyalist paramilitaries.

In the case of Eddie Fullerton, the Police Ombudsman says in general, the RUC enquiries conducted on behalf of An Garda Siochana were completed in a timely and thorough manner but says no record was found that intelligence requests from Gardai between June 1991 and January 1993 were responded to by RUC Special Branch.

Ms Anderson also found no evidence that the RUC made either Mr Fullerton or Gardai aware that
personal information relating to him had been found in a loyalist intelligence ‘cache’ in Derry in November 1989.
