Lack of flood relief measures in Donegal Town raised once again

The issue of flooding in Donegal Town has once again been raised, after funding has still not been granted for flood relief measures along the River Eske.

Councillors were told at the most recent meeting of the Donegal Municipal District that strong political intervention would be required to secure the funding for the area, which has been described as Donegal’s worst flooding blackspot.

Cllr Noel Jordan says that while the money required to put the flood relief measures in place will be significant, he feels that Donegal Town has been ignored once again…

Donegal fishermen to benefit from new Brexit scheme

A new support scheme for the inshore fisheries sector has been announced, to assist inshore fishermen in adjusting to the challenges of Brexit.

The scheme is set to run from March, and will be administered by Bord Iascaigh Mhara.

The scheme was announced by Donegal TD and Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue

Announcing the Scheme, Minister McConalogue said: “The Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and the UK had significant negative impacts for our fishing industry. Our inshore fishers have been particularly and uniquely impacted by logistical and route to market difficulties as exporters of live shellfish and other highly perishable seafood products. These difficulties have added costs to the business model of our inshore fishers and in reducing the shelf life of these highly perishable products have impacted negatively on the sector.

“I am announcing today a forward looking support scheme to assist inshore fishers in adjusting their business model to the post Brexit market environment. The scheme will take the form of a suite of four online training modules to be made available by BIM, specifically tailored to the inshore fishing sector, with a payment to owners of inshore fishing vessels to assist them with the costs of undertaking the training and subsequently adjusting their business and marketing plans. The scheme will be open to owners of fishing vessels under 18 metres in length, registered in the polyvalent, polyvalent potting and specific segments. As recommended by the Seafood Task Force, these one-off payments will be €2,700 for owners of vessels under 8 metres in length and €4,000 for owners of vessels between 8 metres and 17.99 metres in length”.

Over 3,000 Covid cases in NW this week – Breslin

There have been over 3,000 cases of Covid 19 in the North West this week, most of them in Donegal.

On today’s Nine til Noon Show, the HSE’s North West Director of Public Health said given the difficulty in getting accurate figures at the moment, the real figure is probably higher.

Dr Anthony Breslin urged people to continue to adhere to public health guidelines, and told Greg Hughes that while there are indications we may have seen the worst of Omicron, there could be more variants around the corner………..

There will be full match commentary ONLINE with Oisin Kelly and Martin McHugh from the 1.30pm throw in – on highlandradio.com.

A win for Donegal would book a place in the semi final of the competition which would mean at least another game before the league opener at the end of the month against Mayo.

If it is to be the case, the semi final would also clash with the colleges Sigerson Cup competition which would see the likes of the LYIT up against UL.

More of the regular faces will be back in the Donegal this weekend with Jamie and Paul Brennan and Jason McGee set for game time.
