No ‘hybrid’ option for Leaving Cert 2022

Suggestions of a hybrid option for this year’s Leaving Cert’s being dismissed by the State Exams Commission.

The Irish Times reports the option of accredited grades or a written exam isn’t being considered due to the cancellation of the Junior Cert in 2020.

The information from the Junior Cert was seen as crucial in helping teachers grade students for the senior cycle exams over the past two years.

The Commission’s said to be examining other contingency options for this years cohort.

Close contact rule changes top cabinet agenda

Ministers are to approve a number of changes to the Covid testing regime and rules around close contacts this morning.

The Chief Medical Officer has recommended getting rid of the five day isolation period for close contacts of a confirmed case who have had a booster.

People who test positive on an antigen test now won’t need a further PCR test to confirm it in a bid to free up space in the system.

Anyone who tests positive will have to isolate for seven days regardless of whether they’ve had a booster.

While close contacts who have yet to be boosted will also face seven days of isolation.

Separately Minister Catherine Martin will publish the text of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill which will establish an Online Safety Commissioner.

The new watchdog will be tasked with regulating harmful content online and will be allowed to fine non-compliant companies up to 20 million euro or 10 per cent of turnover.

This would cover breaches relating to criminal material, serious cyber-bullying and content promoting self-harm, suicide and eating disorders.

The Commissioner will also take over the regulation of TV and radio stations as well as online streaming platforms like Netflix.

Pringle calls for urgent review of disabled drivers’ scheme

A Donegal TD has called for an urgent review into the Disabled Drivers and Passengers Scheme, after all members on the board of the Disabled Drivers Medical Board of Appeal resigned late last year.

It’s understood the board members, who take decisions on applications to the Disabled Drivers and Passengers Scheme, withdrew after a number of concerns were raised regarding the eligibility threshold to qualify for it – with only five percent of all appeals being successful.

Those wishing to appeal also must travel to Dun Laoghaire in Dublin for a hearing, regardless of their location.

Deputy Thomas Pringle says that the current scheme is archaic, and not fit for purpose……..
