Gardai appeal for information after window was smashed in Letterkenny

Gardaí in Letterkenny are appealing for information, after a window was smashed at the Market Square in the town last week.

The front window of a house at Market Square was smashed between 4am and 6am last Sunday, the 9th of January.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have observed any suspicious activity at the Market Square between those times to contact Letterkenny Garda Station.

Omicron could infect half of Europe’s population in coming weeks – WHO

Omicron could infect more than half the population of Europe in the coming weeks – that’s according to the World Health Organisation.

Over 7 million newly reported cases of Covid 19 were reported in the first week of the year.

The WHO’s Europe Director Hans Kluge says the variant represents a west to east tidal wave sweeping across the region:

81 year old Donegal man to swim around Irish coast for charity

An 81-year-old Donegal man is taking part in a charity swim around the Irish coastline.

Paddy Conaghan is on a mission to swim at every beach and pier in Ireland to raise funds for a local counselling service.

The money raised will go to Gemma’s Legacy of Hope which supports people of all ages in The Rosses area of Donegal.

Paddy explains how he came up with the challenge…

Policing plan being prepared for Inishowen

People in Inishowen are being invited to contribute to a Policing Plan for the Buncrana Garda District, which takes in the whole of the peninsula.

Superintendent Goretti Sheridan says while she was like to meet people and carry out public consultations, that is not possible at the moment, so she’s urging people to make contact with their views and perspectives.

1,062 Covid patients in irish hospitals, 71 in LUH

1,062 Covid patients are being treated in hospitals today – down one from yesterday.

However, the total is still 20 percent higher than last Tuesday.

Latest figures show there’s 89 patients with the virus in ICU.

As of 8pm last night, there were 71 infected patients at Letterkenny University Hospital, two of them in ICU.

That remains the highest figure in the country.

Ulster GAA to refund supporters

Ulster GAA say any supporters who paid to watch the online coverage of Friday night’s McKenna Cup opener between Donegal and Down in Ballybofey will be refunded their 12 euro fee.

There was an angry reaction from many viewers who had to contend with issues while trying to watch the game on Friday night – indeed at one stage the coverage froze for almost 15 minutes.

The issue of Broadband coverage at MacCumhaill Park will now be addressed with the planned installation of Fibre broadband at the venue.

And in the meantime, the Ulster Council say they will refund online patrons after Friday night’s match coverage problems.

Donegal Airport MD wants to bring numbers back to 2019 levels

The Managing Director of Donegal Airport says the priority for 2022 is to try to build passenger numbers back to 2019 levels.

Eilish Doherty was speaking to Greg Hughes following confirmation last week that Emerald Airlines are to take over the Donegal – Dublin service from the end of next month.

She says the Dublin service is the backbone of the airport’s operations, and she’s hopeful the new operator will play a key role in building the airport’s numbers back up again………….

Woman arrested in Derry under Terrorism Act

A 52 year old woman has been arrested in the Creggan area of Derry under the Terrorism Act.

She’s been taken to the Serious Crime Suite at Musgrave Police Station in Belfast for questioning.

Policer say the arrest is part of Operation Ledging, ongoing investigation into the New IRA’s bomb-making activities, as well as the group’s storage of explosive devices and equipment.

Gardai investigate theft of mussel floats at Bruckless

Gardaí are investigating the theft of 35 mussel floats from Darney, Bruckless Pier. The theft occurred between Saturday December 18th and Wednesday last, January 5th.

Gardai say the theft of these floats would most likely have necessitated the use of a lorry, and they’re
appealing to anybody who may have observed any such activity near the Pier over the past few weeks
to contact Gardaí.

They say the owner of the floats has suffered a substantial loss as a result of this theft. If anybody has any information in relation to the theft of these floats, they’re being asked to contact

35 patients awaiting beds at LUH

There were 35 admitted patients awaiting beds at Letterkenny University Hospital this morning, five of them on Emergency Department trolleys.

The figure at Sligo University Hospital was even higher this morning, with 39 patients awaiting beds according to the INMO, 28 of them on Emergency Department trolleys.

That’s a combined North West figure of 74, accounting for almost 19% of the national total of 400.
