Steelstown claim Ulster Intermediate Football Club Championship

Steelstown of Derry are Ulster Intermediate Football Club champions after they beat Moortown of Tyrone 0-06 to 0-04 in Owenbeg.

At half time Moortown led three points to one but a strong second half showing from the Derry champions saw them lift the Patrick McCully Cup.

UK ready to suspend Brexit deal if EU negotiations unsuccesful this week

The British Foreign Secretary says the United Kingdom is ready to take unilateral action that would suspend customs checks on goods moving to Northern Ireland.

Liz Truss is due to hold talks with EU officials this week to resolve disagreements over post-Brexit trade arrangements for Northern Ireland.

Ms Truss said she is willing to trigger Article 16 of the Northern Ireland protocol, which would suspend parts of the treaty designed to prevent a hard border with the Republic, if a deal cannot be struck.

The EU said it was “not too impressed” with the British Foreign Secretary’s threat.

Anti-viral Covid-19 pills could be used in Ireland before EU permission is granted

It’s reported the government has agreed to administer new Covid-19 antiviral pills here before they’re officially approved by European regulators.

The Sunday Independent reports the cabinet has agreed to forgo the need for clearance from the European Medicines Agency to use new the new antiviral treatment from Pfizer, GSK and MSD.

However, the Health Minister is due to consult with the Health Products Regulatory Authority before signing off on the pills.

Local Councillor welcomes new Donegal-Dublin flight operator

A local councillor is welcoming the go-ahead for an airline to operate flights between Donegal and Dublin Airport.

Emerald Airlines has been awarded the contract to run the PSO air service from the county from February 26th.

Donegal Municipal District Councillor Tom Conaghan says the flights are important, given the lack of transport options in the county:

Success at Scottish Open for Finn Valley

Finn Valley AC athlete’s Riona Doherty and Mark Wilkinson tasted success in Glasgow on Saturday afternoon at the Scottish Open.

Doherty claimed victory in the 60 metre Hurdles for under 17’s in a time of 9.02 seconds finishing ahead of Darcie Black from Dunfermline and Zoe Loughrey of Glasgow AC who finished in third.

Whilst, in the under 15, High Jump, Mark Wilkinson finished in third and set a new Personal Best of 1.48 metres.

150,000 Covid-19 infections may have been missed due to lack of PCR tests

As demand for PCR tests continues, the HSE this week estimated that up to 150,000 Covid-19 infections may have escaped official confirmation.

From last week, symptomatic people aged between 4 and 39 were advised to contact the HSE and request for antigen tests to be sent out to them.

21,384 new Covid-19 cases today

A total of 21,384 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 have been announced today in the Republic of Ireland.

984 patients are in hospitals with the virus, a rise of 67 compared to yesterday.

Of those, 83 are in ICU, the same as Saturday’s figure.
