Oisin Orr launches Donegal Sports Star Virtual Awards

2020 Overall Winner Oisin Orr.

The 2021 Donegal Sports Star Awards have been launched by the reigning Overall winner jockey Oisin Orr.

The awards are going virtual again due to Covid-19 with the show taking place on Friday night, 28th of January at 7.30 p.m.

The 2020 Overall winner Orr said it was a great honour to be asked to formally launch the event.

“It’s a very nice honour to be doing this for the committee and I hope that all sports people will watch the award winners being announced on the night. I didn’t expect to be the Overall winner last year and it’s something that I always remember. To be picked as the best in Donegal is something very special. It was great for my family back at home who had given me so much support going back to the pony racing days in Rathmullan. To be in the same company as other successful sports people in the county on the night we presented with the awards was just a great feeling for me” Orr said.

The Rathmullan man was the first jockey to win the Donegal Sports Star Overall Award in the 45-year history of the event. Orr enjoyed another decent season in 2021 recording 24 wins and it might have been more only for the fact that he broke his hand in a race at Navan in September.

Donegal Sports Star Awards Chairperson said the live launch in the Mount Errigal Hotel had become a very big part of the event build-up in recent years. However, due to the pandemic that wasn’t possible for the second successive year.

“Oisin was a most deserving Overall winner last year and the committee is delighted that he has now launched the 2021 Awards. I wan to wish him well for the 2022 racing season. We’re going virtual again and work is continuing on finalising all the awards in the next week or so. A lot of time is also going to make sure we are ready to go on Friday 28th and we want to see the sporting public tuning in at 7.30 to see the stars of 2021 being honoured” the Chairperson said.

Once again Donegal County Council is the exclusive sponsor and their support is key to the success of the awards which will be staged for the 46th time. “We really appreciate the Council’s support and they have really backed when the decision was made not to break the link last year when the live function could not be held because of the pandemic. The committee decided to go with a virtual awards and that decision was given full support by Chief Executive John McLaughlin. We thank him very much for that and it is full steam ahead now to get ready for the second virtual awards.”

The first Donegal Sports Star Awards were held in November 1976 in the Milford Inn.

Education Minister: teachers can open windows “at a lower level” if children are cold

The Education Minister says teachers should open windows “at a lower level” if their classrooms are cold.

Ventilation requirements for pandemic safety have seen some classroom temperatures dip below seven degrees Celsius this week, due to open windows and a lack of HEPA-like air filtering.

Health and safety rules require teaching to be suspended if a school classroom reaches below 16 degrees celsius, but many schools have reported temperatures far below that this week.

Teachers’ unions have also criticised a lack of progress on acquiring air filtration systems for classrooms as an alternative to the opening of windows for ventilation.

But Education Minister Norma Foley claims they have been “encouraged” by window ventilation despite these issues…

Photo: @Pompey on Twitter

Ronan Curtis has broken the record for the most Portsmouth goals scored by a single player in the 21st century.

The former Derry City man achieved the feat in dramatic style netting on 89 minutes to level their Papa John’s Trophy game with Exeter before sealing Pompey’s win on 93 minutes.

Curtis’ tally for Portsmouth now sits at 45 goals which is two clear of former Nigerian International Yakubu.

After the game the 25 year old said: “I’ve been waiting a long time for it! It’s a huge honour for me and my family and an amazing feeling.

“There are some massive people on that list and I’m grateful to be up there with those quality names. It’s not bad company to be in.

“It’s always nice to help the lads get a win and it’s similar to the last time we played Exeter in this competition.

“We showed the right attitude and commitment to get through to the next round after conceding late on.”

Leading World Athletics Official to launch new Finn Valley AC book

Finn Valley Athletics Club have announced that Pierce O’Callaghan, the head of competition management at World Athletics, will officially launch “Beyond The Line, Finn Valley Athletics Club, A History.”

O’Callaghan will be at the Finn Valley campus on Friday, January 14, to launch the publication which celebrates Finn Valley AC’s Golden Jubilee.

O’Callaghan is the first Irishman to hold such a high-ranking position in World Athletics having himself won 16 national titles over varying race-walking distances.

“Beyond The Line, Finn Valley Athletics Club, A History”, was written by Donegal-based journalist and author Chris McNulty and supported by Donegal Local Development Company (DLDC).

“Finn Valley AC’s history is absolutely remarkable,” O’Callaghan said.

“Beyond The Line serves not just as an outstanding publication to celebrate 50 years of Finn Valley AC, but will be a constant reminder of what is possible for the club and what can be achieved.

“Finn Valley AC’s development – running parallel to its athletic successes – could serve as a blueprint for clubs anywhere in the world.

“I congratulate Finn Valley AC on the publication of Beyond The Line and am delighted to have been asked to perform the official launch of the book.”

O’Callaghan was previously the director of sport for the 2015 European Games, the director of operations at the 2017 World Athletics Championships and in 2019 was the director of readiness at the World Athletics Championships.

He was the brainchild of the recent establishment of the World Athletics Continental Tour.

“It is brilliant for Finn Valley AC to get such an endorsement from World Athletics,” Finn Valley AC Chairperson and founder member Patsy McGonagle said.

“We are particularly delighted when the person concerned is an Irishman holding such a high profile position.

“Pierce’s passion for the sport of athletics has always marked him out. As an athlete, he would’ve been with me at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney but for an injury.

“Pierce’s association with Donegal athletics and indeed Finn Valley AC goes back to his childhood days with the family connection through his father, Bernie.

“We are proud to welcome Pierce to Finn Valley AC and are very appreciative of him taking the time out of such a busy schedule to launch Beyond The Line.”

The 240-page book is published by the Buncrana-based Archway Press with design and layout by Mary Campbell.

“Beyond The Line, Finn Valley Athletics Club, A History”, will be launched at 6.30pm on Friday, January 14, at the Finn Valley campus.
