Vaccine registration for all 5-11 year olds open

Online registration for Covid-19 vaccination for all children aged five to eleven is now open.

Parents and guardians can register their children through the HSE’s website.

The Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan is encouraging parents to engage with the trusted medical advice from the health service before making their decision.

Number of changes to Derry City and Strabane Council services next week

Derry City and Strabane District Council has advised that there will be a number of changes to some Council services next week.

The changes include some temporary closures of Council Recycling Sites and are due to staff shortages and resulting pressures on services.

In the Strabane area, Plumbridge recycling centre will be closed on Monday, Spamount will be closed on Tuesday and Thursday while on Wednesday, Newtownstewart will be closed and Donemana shut on Friday.

In the Derry area Claudy Recycling centre will be closed Monday and Tuesday while
Park Recycling Centre will be closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The decision has also been taken to temporarily suspend the Council’s Bulky Lift Service over the coming weeks.

The public are being advised that every effort is being made to keep the majority of essential services in the Derry and Strabane District operational within the restrictions in place by the NI Executive and in the interests of public safety and staff and the Council hope to resume these services as soon as possible.

Donegal angling clubs encouraged to apply for funding

Angling clubs in Donegal are being encouraged to apply for sponsorship funding.

Inland Fisheries Ireland is reminding people that the deadline for its 2022 sponsorship programme on January 21st.

This year’s €30,000 fund will have a particular focus on initiatives aimed at beginners and young anglers, as well as events that promote sustainable angling tourism.

Meanwhile, applications for equipment, staff support and biosecurity assistance can be made to Inland Fisheries Ireland throughout the year.

Donegal start McKenna Cup campaign with victory over Down

Donegal got their 2022 campaign off to the best possible start with a 1-13 to 2-08 win over Down in the Dr McKenna Cup.

Declan Bonner’s men led nine points to 1-04 with Andrew Gilmore finding the back of the net for Down.

Tony McClenaghan’s goal midway through the second half gave Donegal a four point buffer before Owen Murdock’s strike gave James McCartan’s side the lead once more.

Points late on from Ciaran Thompson, Peadar Mogan and Patrick McBrearty sealed Donegal’s two point win.

Darragh Kelly gets new date for Bellator debut

Darragh Kelly has been given a new date for his Bellator debut.

The Moville man will take on Englishman Junior Morgan on February 25 in the 3Arena in Dublin.

Kelly, who trains under John Kavanagh was originally set to make his professional debut in November but the fight was called off the night before it was due to take place with Morgan suffering a concussion.

 

Further 21,926 confirmed cases of Covid-19

 

The Department of Health has reported a further 21,926 confirmed cases of Covid-19.

As of 8 o’clock this morning, 936 people are currently in hospital with the virus – a decrease of 5 since yesterday.

84 Covid patients are being treated in intensive care – a drop of 2 in the past 24 hours.

Decision on LYIT winter assessments due next week

 

Students at Letterkenny Institute of Technology should know the fate of their winter exams next week.

Discussions between LYIT management and Students’ Union representatives continued over the course of today on plans for rescheduling the exams.

In a joint statement this evening, both parties say they are optimistic that discussions will come to a satisfactory conclusion early next week, at which point a further update will be issued.

Deadline must be set for conclusion of protocol talks – Donaldson

The leader of the DUP’s going to ask Westminster to set a deadline for talks on the Northern Ireland protocol.

Negotiations between the EU and UK are to pick up again next week – with British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss taking over from David Frost.

Jeffrey Donaldson – who’s threatened to collapse power-sharing over the issue – says talks can’t keep dragging on……….
