Cllr believes more armed Gardai are needed following serious assault on Garda

There are calls for more armed Gardai in light of a serious assault on a member of the force last month.

Garda Padraig Scott was found in a disorientated state, injured and covered in a flammable substance after he was attacked while on duty in the Loughan, Blacklion area of Cavan on 27 February.

The Garda remains off duty while he recovers from his injuries and the trauma of the late-night attack.

Cllr Michael McClafferty says the tools Gardai currently have at their disposal are clearly inadequate:

Calls for £200 energy payment to be issued to every bill payer in North

A West Tyrone MLA is calling for a £200 energy payment in the North to be given to every bill payer.

It follows the announcement by SSE Airtricity of a hike in natural gas prices by 39% from April.

MLA Daniel McCrossan says this rise in the cost of gas is the latest in a long line of blows to families who will be simply unable to meet these price rises.

He says too many families have now passed breaking point and have no idea how they are going to get through the coming weeks and months and something must be done to alleviate the situation:

Resolution to rising fuel costs ‘shameful’ – Deputy Doherty

A Donegal Deputy has described the Government’s resolution to rising fuel costs as shameful.

People will see a drop of between 15 and 20 cent a litre at the pumps this morning after a reduction in excise duty came into effect at midnight last night.

But opposition parties have said the move isn’t enough with concern over no reduction in home heating oil.

Speaking in the Dail, Deputy Pearse Doherty is adamant that the measures don’t go to the limits of what the Government could do:

Preparatory work begins on extension of Derry City Cemetery

Residents in the Kildrum Gardens and surrounding areas of Creggan in Derry are advised that preparatory work has now begun to facilitate the extension of the City Cemetery.

The works are expected to last approximately nine months.

People living in and around the area are advised that during this period there may be some minor delays and disruption.

At certain times the work may necessitate restrictions on access to the City Cemetery, with advance notice provided on Council’s social media of alternative access arrangements.

Plans to extend the cemetery through the construction of 950 additional plots were approved by Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Committee in January.

It’s expected that the extension will extend the operational life of the City Cemetery for new plot openings by up to seven years.

An associated access road will also be extended from the existing cemetery site, and additional parking spaces will be provided along the new access road.

The local community in the area has been informed of the work, and views were sought in relation to the application throughout the planning process.
