Unrest among nursing staff at LUH over unsafe environment – INMO

The INMO has called for a bespoke plan to tackle issues of overcrowding and staff safety at Letterkenny University Hospital.

It comes as the hospital remains the most overcrowded in the country with 53 people waiting on a trolley there today, bringing to a total of 761, the number of people waiting on a bed at the hospital so far this month.

Staff at Letterkenny University Hospital are suffering burnout with unrest amongst nursing staff who feel the hospital environment is unsafe for them and patients as the Omicron variant of Covid-19 spreads.

The INMO is warning that the HSE has failed in it’s duty of care obligation to provide a safe place of work.

INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Neal Donohoe, says high levels of patient attendance and staffing ratios means just one nurse is available in the Emergency Department to care for over 20 patients.

There’s fears over the provision of care also where extra beds and trolleys are placed on wards, as additional staff are not being made available to service them.

The nursing body has raised concerns that enough is not being done to mitigate the risks of covid-19 transmission in the hospital.

The INMO have escalated issues of concern to Saolta.

It’s calling for urgent action to be taken to improve the working conditions in the hospital, to retain staff, resolve overcrowding and ensure patients receive timely and safe care.

INMO statement in full:

Responding to persistent levels of overcrowding Letterkenny University Hospital, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has called for a bespoke plan to tackle issues of overcrowding and staff safety in the hospital.

INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Neal Donoghue said:

“Letterkenny University Hospital is currently experiencing very high levels of patient attendance leading to overcrowded and unsafe conditions in the hospital. This is a hospital-wide problem where the Emergency Department and wards that are in escalation are overcrowded, providing the ideal environment for COVID-19 to thrive.

“High levels of community transmission of COVID-19 and concerns regarding the rapid spread of Omicron are causing an unrest amongst the nursing staff who feel the hospital environment is unsafe for them as workers and unsafe for their patients.

“The INMO has sought information regarding the ventilation and air filtration in Letterkenny UH last September. Management have not yet been able to confirm they have appropriate resilience against airborne transmission of Covid-19 in the hospital. Given the excessive overcrowding we are deeply concerned that enough is not being done to mitigate the risks of covid-19 transmission in the Hospital.

“Where extra beds and trolleys are placed on wards, extra staff are not provided to care for those patients. Staff report fears that care being compromised as a result.

“Letterkenny University Hospital has consistently been in the top three most overcrowded hospitals almost daily since October. So far in December there has been 708 patients on trolleys, accounting for 12% of the total national figure.

“This is a very serious issue of public safety and staff safety. The HSE have an obligation to provide a safe place of work and they are failing in that duty of care. Nurses report on a daily basis that they fear patients are at increased risk due to the failure of the HSE to resolve health and safety concerns in the hospital.

“Due to the high levels of patient attendance one nurse in the ED is expected to care for over twenty patients at a time. There is no doubt with such poor staffing ratios patient care will be compromised. Due to the excessive workloads staff often miss breaks and are being asked to defer annual leave. This is resulting in stress and burnout of staff and is adding to the problem with retaining nursing staff.

“The INMO have escalated issues of concern to Saolta. Urgent action must be taken to improve the working conditions in the hospital, to retain staff, and to resolve the overcrowding problem and to ensure the public receive the timely and safe care they need.”

Donegal Sports Star Awards going virtual again

2020 Overall Winner Oisin Orr.

The Donegal Sports Star Awards is going to be a virtual event for the second year running.

The decision was taken by the committee based on the most recent public health guidelines announced by the Government. The 2021 Awards event will take place on Friday evening the 28th of January. Donegal Sports Star Awards Chairperson Grace Boyle said public health was the priority and in the midst of the ongoing Covid-19 situation a live function would not take place.

“We’re obviously disappointed that we cannot have a live function in the Mount Errigal Hotel. But, the recent restrictions announced by the Government because of Covid-19 really just rubber stamped our own feelings that in the interest of public health we would move the awards to a virtual event for the second year running. The committee made a big call to go virtual for the 2020 awards and that was a big success bearing in mind it was a venture into the unknown for us.

We were able to announce the 12 winners at that event at the end of January but due to the pandemic it was nine months before we were able to make the actual presentations in the Mount Errigal Hotel. I want to thank Donegal County Council for again being our exclusive sponsor and their support is key to the committee being able to deliver an event that recognises the sporting achievers of 2021.”

Concerns raised over Gola Island water infrastructure once again

Irish Water and Donegal County Council are being urged to address issues with the water infrastructure on Gola Island once and for all.

Serious health and safety concerns have been raised as the main pipe from the mainland to Gola has resurfaced once again.

Cllr Michael Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig says it is not good enough that this is allowed to continue year on year:

106% increase in children in Donegal not allocated social worker

There’s been a 106% increase in the number of children in Donegal who haven’t been allocated a social worker – despite child protection and welfare concerns.

Latest figures from Tusla reveal 181 cases in the county, 55 of which are classified as high priority have yet to be allocated a social worker. The figure was 88 last year.
