“We failed residents, families and staff” – HSE

A senior HSE official has said the Brandon report shows that service users, families and staff were failed in the response to what was happening at the Sean O’Hare Unit and Ard Greine Court in Stranorlar.

Speaking to Greg Hughes on today’s Nine til Noon Show, Bernard O’Regan, Head of Operations for Disabilities with the HSE said the report was shocking, but pledged that recommendations in it would be implemented…………

PSNI investigate armed robbery at Derry shop

A staff member has been left badly shaken after an armed robbery at a shop on Derry’s Northland Avenue last evening.

Two men, both armed with knives and wearing balaclavas, entered the shop at around 7:50pm and threatened a female staff member before making off with a quantity of cigarettes, a sum of cash and a mobile phone belonging to the staff member.

The first man was around 5 feet 10 inches tall, of stocky build, and wearing a grey jumper, dark blue track bottoms and blue and black Nike trainers.

The second man was around 5 feet 7 inches tall, of slim build, and wearing a black coat and black leggings.

The staff member was not physically injured as a result of the incident but was left badly shaken.

Police have launched an investigation, and anyone with any information is asked to contact detectives at Strand Road PSNI Station.

Cockhill beat Finn Harps under-21s to edge closer to Bonagee

Cockhill Celtic registered an impressive 4-1 win against Finn Harps Under-21s under the floodlights at the Letterkenny Community Centre on Thursday evening.

Corey McBride, Garbhan Friel, Jason Breslin and Stephen Duffy were the scorers for the Gavin Cullen managed side. Luke Rudden was on target for Harps.

This result means Cockhill have closed the gap on leaders Bonagee to four points, and they have two games in hand.

Councillor says Irish fluency requirement should remain for gardai

The Chair of Donegal County Council’s Irish Language Committee has criticised the Government’s recent move to remove fluency in Irish as a requirement for someone to become a member of An Garda Siochana.

Glenties Councillor Michael Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig says that the decision has not come as a shock to the Irish language speaking community.

He says it’s a clear indication of the Government’s lack of care for the Irish language….

Delays in new Letterkenny Town Plan are impacting Buncrana – Donaghey

An Inishowen Councillor says that people are unable to get planning permission on the outskirts of Buncrana because the local Development Plan has not been updated.

Cllr Rena Donaghey says the refusals are because of provisions in the old town plan, which expired in 2020.

She says members want to change the plan, but cannot do so, because the council’s planners are concentrating their efforts on completing a new plan for Letterkenny………

Solicitor suggests Brandon victims could sue HSE

The victims of sexual abuse at a Donegal care home could take legal action against the HSE, seeking substantial damages.

That’s the view of a leading solicitor, after 18 residents with intellectual disabilities were abused over a 13-year period.

A review has found staff and management had ‘full knowledge’ of the incidents, which were carried out by another service-user.

Medical negligence solicitor, Cian O’Carroll, says the victims could take the HSE to court, through other parties………….

NPHET to recommend 5pm closing for pubs and restaurants

NPHET has recommended pubs and restaurants close at 5pm as soon as possible, as the Omicron variant spreads here.

They’ve also called for indoor and outdoor events to be capped at a maximum of 50 per cent capacity.

But they haven’t recommended the early closure of schools for Christmas, or further limits on household visits.

Cabinet ministers will consider the recommendations today.

Gardaí investigate death of man in Letterkenny

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man, aged in his 50s, at a house in Letterkenny today.

The man’s remains have been removed to the local mortuary and a post-mortem will take place at a later date.

Investigations are ongoing, it’s understood foul play is not suspected at this time.

4,141 new ROI Covid-19 cases

The Department of Health has announced 4,141 new cases of Covid-19 in the Republic of Ireland today.

There are now 443 patients in hospitals with the virus, down from 470 yesterday.

Latest figures also show that 108 patients are receiving ICU treatment for Covid here.
