Finished Three School Campus could be five years away

The Principal of Crana College says the Buncrana Three School Campus has taken a big step forward but acknowledged that the finished product is still a long way off.

A design team is set to be appointed after the Education Minister gave the green light for initial project approval yesterday.

Talks between the Department of Education and the landowners of the site on the Causeway Road are ongoing after a CPO was previously approved.

Principal Kevin Cooley says being realistic, it could be 5 years before they’re in the building:

Calls for more progress on Letterkenny to Burtonport Greenway

A Letterkenny and Milford District Councillor says he wants to see more commitment from Donegal County Council to promoting and developing the Letterkenny to Burtonport Greenway.

Cllr Michael McBride says this was one of the first greenway projects in the county to be progressed, largely because a large number of people attached to community groups right along the route put in a lot of work to get the ball rolling.

However, Cllr McBride believes the council could and should be doing more in order to have the Letterkenny to Burtonport route reach its potential:

Hospitality bosses urged to give more flexibility to keep staff

Hospitality bosses are being asked to offer staff a 4 day working week or alternate weekends off in order to keep them.

A study by the South East Regional Skills Forum has recommended 18 measures aimed at attracting and securing workers in the hospitality industry.

Ongoing training, upskilling and providing clear career pathways are also recommended.

Manager of the Forum Edmond Connolly says with staff shortages right across the country, all employers can benefit from the recommendations they’ve made.

Paddy Diver has been thanked for his courage and actions in the 100% Mica Redress No Less Campaign.

Mr. Diver announced that he’s stepping away from the campaign in a social media post last night, citing personal attacks on him and his family for the decision.

Paddy was instrumental in organising protests in Dublin in June and October which brought tens of thousands of affected homeowners, and their supporters, to the capital’s streets.

Speaking on social media last night, PRO of the Mica Action Group Michael Doherty says no man has done more for affected homeowners:

Land prices in Donegal fall by almost 45%

There’s been a significant drop in the price of land in Donegal, with the Irish Farmers Journal reporting fall of almost 45%, the steepest reduction in the country.

That compares to a national increase in land prices of 16% over 2020 prices.

The average price of land across the Republic of Ireland last year was €11,966 an acre, up 16% on 2020 figures.

In Donegal, the average price of farmland fell by 44% to €9,589 an acre, compared to €17,176 an acre in 2020. However, the Farmers Journal’s analysis notes the supply of farmland for sale in Donegal in 2021 returned to more usual levels, after a drop the previous year caused by the lengthy COVID-19 lockdowns put on border counties.

One sale made national headlines: the purchase of 116 acres on Inch Island at auction for €850,000 with the buyer – a business person – planning to rewild the land.

The paper notes this reflects what it describes as a new category of buyer emerging for the first time – business people buying land to re-wild and to offset carbon.

Old Killaghtee Graveyard joins the Adopt a Monument Scheme

The early medieval church, cross and historic graveyard in Killaghtee has been selected as one of five heritage sites in Ireland to join the Heritage Council’s prestigious ‘Adopt a Monument’ scheme.  Following an open call for applications in September 2021, more than 40 community groups countrywide applied to adopt a monument in their locality.  The scheme aims to empower communities to become actively involved in the conservation and interpretation of their local archaeological and heritage sites.

“Dunkineely Community Limited is to be congratulated on putting together a strong application to The Heritage Council to have Old Killaghtee Church and historic graveyard included in the Adopt a Monument scheme” said Joseph Gallagher, County Donegal Heritage Officer.  “The selection process is highly competitive and involves the National Monuments Service, the Discovery Programme, a community archaeologist and Abarta Heritage.  The application had cross-community support from the local Tidy Towns Committee and the Roman Catholic, Church of Ireland and Methodist churches.  The Adopt a Monument scheme will provide expertise, mentoring, training, support and networking to help to preserve and protect the monument for future generations.  The Adopt a Monument scheme is managed by Abarta Heritage on behalf of The Heritage Council and it also works with communities in preparing a conservation management plan and in sourcing funding.  Support in surveying and investigation work will be provided by the Discovery Programme which is the state’s archaeological research institute.”

The peninsula leading from Dunkineely to St. John’s Point has many important heritage sites.  Killaghtee Cross (DG098-013002-), Old Killaghtee Church (DG098-013001-) and Graveyard (DG098-013004-) and a bullaun stone (DG098-013003-) are all archaeological monuments protected under the National Monuments Acts (1930-2014) at the Adopt a Monument site in Beaugreen Glebe townland.  The graveyard is one of 50 historic graveyards in the guardianship of Donegal County Council.  Community groups in County Donegal have been successful in securing places for three archaeological monuments in the county under the scheme in the past so the Old Killaghtee Church, Cross and Graveyard will join Doon Fort near Ardara, Kilbarron Castle near Rossnowlagh and Malin Well Old Church near Malin Head in the scheme.  If you would like to find out more about these archaeological monuments or archaeological monuments in your area, you can visit the National Monuments Service website at www.archaeology.ie.

The other heritage sites countrywide included in this year’s scheme are an Anglo-Norman motte castle in the heart of Inniskeen, County Monaghan; St James’ Church in Dingle, County Kerry (home to the Other Voices Music Festival), a ring fort in Baltimore, West Cork which is perched above Church Strand Bay; and Dunmanogue Church and Graveyard in Kildare.  The Adopt a Monument Scheme offers opportunities to become actively involved in the conservation and interpretation of heritage sites in your local area; collaborate and work together as a community; participate in community development; boost regional tourism, business and employment opportunities; and develop and understand the story of your locality and learn new skills.  Advice and assistance on making a future application to the Adopt a Monument scheme is available from the County Donegal Heritage Office, Donegal County Council on (074) 917 2576 or by e-mail at heritage@donegalcoco.ie
