There will be more celebrations for St Eunan’s today.

The Letterkenny side won the  Donegal Under-21A football title on Sunday following their 1-13 to 1-9 win over MacCumhaill’s.

They add the u21 crown to the Senior, Senior B, Senior Hurling and Ladies Intermediate football titles that the club had already win this year.

St Eunan’s took the title thanks to a Shane O’Donnell goal late in the game.

Truckers to protest in Dublin today

Major traffic disruption is expected in Dublin today due to a truckers protest.

The group, Irish Truckers & Haulage Association Against Fuel Prices, are protesting the increased cost of petrol and diesel.

It’s the second such protest in a month, and will see truckers create slow moving convoys on main inbound routes.

Man still being held in connection with murder of Eddie Fullerton

A 56 year-old man is still being held this morning in connection with the murder of Donegal County Councillor Eddie Fullerton 30 years ago.

Edward Fullerton was discovered dead at his home in Buncrana on Saturday the 25th of May, 1991.

Gardaí from the Donegal Division made the arrest yesterday morning.

He is in custody at Letterkenny Garda Station and gardai are appealing for information.

Five Donegal projects receiving grants to combat isolation

Five Donegal Community Projects aimed at combatting isolation during Covid-19 are receiving support from a round of grants supported by private donors to The Community Foundation for Ireland.

The grants are being provided through The Foundations Covid-Recovery Fund which has been supporting communities throughout the Pandemic with money raised by Private and Corporate Donors.

The support is being provided in two strands, with the ‘Overcoming Isolation’ programme giving support to local groups on the ground support. while ‘Building Capacity’ is aimed at bigger national groups who support people across the country.

The five Donegal groups are Liquid Therapy in South Donegal, Letterkenny Youth & Family Service, Donegal Women’s Centre, Bundoran Community Development CLG and Scioból na bhFear, Men’s Shed.

Liquid Therapy South Donegal to support participants in developing their own surf and ocean skills to improve their mental health and wellbeing in their everyday life 
Letterkenny Youth & Family Service (LYFS). This project is to breathe life back into the people of the community, remove the restrictions of the home by building confidence to engage with others, socialise have fun and make meaningful connections 
Donegal Women’s Centre. Through the use of Mindfulness Creative Art and Crafting Therapy, that older aged women will feel included, connected to themselves and others and have learned a new approach to positive mental health and well-being. 
Bundoran Community Development CLG Co Donegal To provide a setting to bring older people from community together for a “chat and a cuppa” (comhrá agus cupán) 
Scioból na bhFear, Men’s Shed. This project is to build on the successful Pilot Covid-Lockdown Zoom Remote Tea and Chat, to create a hybrid meet, chat and learn space to provide company, reduce Digital Literacy resistance, fears and Deficits among older men in a rural Community 

Announcing the grants, the Community Foundation for Ireland said throughout the pandemic they have been working with amazing community partners and supporting their work on the ground across Donegal.

 

 

Clones to host Downings Ulster Final

The Ulster Council have fixed the Ulster Junior Football Final between Downings and Denn for Clones next Sunday 19th December at 1pm.

The Donegal champions beat the highly fancied Sean McDermotts of Monaghan on Saturday to set up a decider against the Cavan side.

The Downings v Denn Ulster Final will be LIVE on Highland with Oisin Kelly and Martin McHugh.

Knockalla Caravans Cup round-up

Aileach, Letterkenny Rovers and Finn Harps under-21s all booked their place in the next round of the Knockalla Caravans Cup following Sunday’s first round matches.

Goals from Caolan Doherty (2) and Mark McElhinney helped Aileach to an impressive 3-1 win over Monaghan United.

Letterkenny Rovers and Finn Harps chalked up 1-0 wins over Castlefin Celtic and Buncrana Hearts respectively.

Elsewhere, on Saturday, a Garbhan Friel strike was enough for Cockhill Celtic as they beat Glengad United while Dean Larkin got a hat-trick in Bonagee’s 4-2 success over Greencastle.

 

Interview: Irish and Shelbourne star Ciara Grant reviews season and looks ahead to 2022

Republic of Ireland and Shelbourne star Ciara Grant has had a great year on the field of play, helping her club to capture the Women’s National League title while on the international front she is very much back in the frame.

Speaking to Chris Ashmore on Sunday Sport, the qualified Dublin-based doctor spoke of her playing days and her hopes for 2022, which include trying to get to the Women’s World Cup Finals.

Irish impress at European Cross Country Championships

It was a day to remember for the thousands in attendance at the  European Cross Country Championships at the Sport Ireland Campus in Dublin, with Ireland claiming three medals on a historic occasion for Irish athletics.

And they were very close to getting a fourth with Finn Valley AC twins Eilish and Roisin Flanagan both producing great runs in the senior women’s event, but the Irish team was just pipped for bronze by the Germans.

Ireland finishing 3rd nation overall on the points table behind GB & NI, and France (5th overall on medal table).

Ireland secured the team gold medal in the men’s U23 event, led by Darragh McElhinney who took the silver medal in scintillating style.

The day started with a bang, with Ireland winning team silver in the men’s U20 6000m (1 point off gold) behind GB & NI.
