Government accused of signing away “historic fishing rights” at Rockall

The Government has once again been accused of signing away Ireland’s “historic fishing rights” at Rockall in the North Atlantic.

The uninhabited island of Rockall is around 419km off the cost of Donegal, and around 386km from St Kilda’s to the north-west of Scotland.

Ownership of the island and the fishing rights in the waters surrounding it has been a hot topic over the last couple of years.

Earlier this year a Greencastle fishing vessel was prevented from fishing in the waters around Rockall by a Marine Scotland patrol boat.

Speaking in the Dail, Donegal Deputy Padraig MacLochlainn says its unacceptable that the issue has been allowed to drag on:

“Big increase” in cold call fraud in Donegal – Chief Superintendent

There’s been a big increase in cold caller fraud in Donegal.

Donegal’s Chief Superintendent Terry McGinn made those comments at the latest sitting of the Joint Policing Committee.

In many cases in the county, people have lost large sums of money as a result of such fraudulent activity.

It’s believed that a lot of incidents also go unreported as people may have fallen victim to so-called ‘romantic scams’.

Chair of the Donegal Joint Policing Committee Cllr Gerry McMonagle is encouraging people to report these type of crimes:

Just days left to give your views on Age Friendly Strategy

There are just a few days left to contribute to a new strategy prioritising the needs of the older community as part of a consultation being led by Derry City and Strabane District Council.

The consultation, which closes on December 17th, is one element of the campaign of engagement with older people which will help shape the new Age Friendly Strategy for Derry and Strabane.

The strategy aims to ensure that the needs of older people are reflected in all future policies and services for the Council area.

A Co-Design Steering Group of older people and people who advocate for older people will meet monthly, and stakeholder workshops have taken place in recent months involving a range of partners.

There will be a series of other chances for the public to engage including focus group meetings, pop up engagement opportunities, creative workshops and even postcards based on age friendly themes which can be returned by Freepost.

You can access the survey online until December 17th
