Lifford/Stranorlar housing list ‘through the roof’

A Donegal County Councillor says he and others pubic representatives are inundated with complaints from people in the Lifford / Stranorlar area who can’t find anywhere to live.

The social housing crisis in Donegal has been described as at levels previously unseen before with waiting lists said to be through the roof.

It has led to calls on Donegal County Council to look at various Council-owned sites with a view towards housing development.

Cllr Gary Doherty says this needs to be done as a matter of urgency:

Defeat for McShane in Ulster Final

Paddy McShane lost out in the flyweight final at the Ulster Elite Championships on Thursday night in Belfast.

The Letterkenny ABC fighter suffered a narrow 3-2 split decision loss to Craig Bigger from Cookstown.

Disappointment on the night for McShane but it wasn’t a bad year as he took an Irish elite title back in October.

Tyrone expected to dominate All Stars

Ronan McNamee & Cathal McShane 2019 All Stars

The GAA/GPA Football All Stars and Footballer of the Year will be announced tonight.

Tyrone pair Conor Meyler and Kieran McGeary and Mayo’s Lee Keegan are on the Footballer of the Year shortlist while Darragh Canavan is on the shortlist for Young Player of the Year along with last year’s winner from Mayo Oisin Mullen and Galways Matthew Tierney.

Fifteen of the forty five nominations are from the Red Hand county and they will be looking to at least match their haul of seven when they last won the All Ireland in 2008 or even equal the eight they took in 2005.

Given records were broken with the Hurling All Stars earlier in the week, would nine be a possibility for the Ulster men.

Cathal McShane and Ronan McNamee were Tyrone’s last All Star winners in 2019.

Minister O’Brien visits Donegal Intercultural Platform

Minister of State Joe O’Brien is in Letterkenny today visiting the Donegal Intercultural Platform CDP.

It is one of seven successful organisations taking part in the pilot Community Development Programme.

The €1m pilot programme is aimed at trialling community led interventions that address poverty, social exclusion and inequality, and promote human rights.

Donegal Intercultural Platform CDP has been working with Black and Minority Ethnic Communities including Traveller and Roma Communities in Donegal using community development principles since its inception in 2009.

The project put forward as part of the pilot Community Development Programme will continue this theme by building on their strong track record of promoting interculturalism, human rights, equality and inclusion across the county of Donegal.

This will be done by using a community development approach in solidarity with relevant national, local organisations and local community and voluntary structures.

Surveying for National Broadband Plan expands in Donegal

A survey on Donegal households as it relates to broadband is said to be well underway.

National Broadband Ireland, the company rolling out the new high-speed fibre broadband network under the Government’s National Broadband Plan is conducting the surveys in several areas of the county.

In Donegal, there are over 32,000 premises in the Intervention Area, which includes homes, farms, commercial businesses and schools.

This equates to approximately a third of all premises in the county.

Under the National Broadband Plan, Donegal will see an investment of €128M in the new high speed fibre network.

In a statement, NBI say this will enable e-learning, remote monitoring of livestock or equipment, e-health initiatives, better energy efficiency in the home, and facilitate increased levels of remote working.

Crews are said to have made substantial progress in Donegal with a number of areas in and around Letterkenny surveyed.

These initial works pave the way for the next stage of the rollout.

All NBI contractors will also carry official ID cards and essential worker letters, and have received training on adhering to all Covid 19 guidelines. They will have vehicles, PPE, and signage with both their own, and NBI logos.

Reports of injection spiking ‘extremely worrying’

The CEO of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre says she finds recent reports of injection spiking extremely worrying.

Investigations are continuing into a number of alleged incidents in Donegal.

Warnings have been issued and Gardai continue to appeal to victims to come forward.

Speaking on today’s Nine Til Noon Show CEO Noeline Blackwell says ‘spiking’ is certainly not a new phenomenon but has described the new injection element as incredible.

She has also acknowledged that for investigative purposes, it’s very difficult to test for an unknown drug:
