Storm Barra: Worst impact to hit Donegal during rush hour

 

An Orange weather warning is coming into place for Donegal later tonight.

The alert will be in place from 2am to 2pm tomorrow with Met Eireann forecasting severe or damaging gusts and potentially some coastal flooding.

Donegal County Council’s Adverse Weather team is monitoring the situation ; Director of Services Garry Martin says the warning will be in effect for Donegal during rush hour tomorrow and he is urging extreme caution.

He says given the nature of the winds expected, it will give rise to hazardous driving conditions:

Local testing centres to close for a time tomorrow

 

Letterkenny and Donegal Town COVID-19 Testing Centres will remain open as normal this evening.

However due to the Orange Weather warning coming into place from 2am tomorrow morning, both COVID-19 Testing Centres will remain closed until 1pm tomorrow Wednesday 8th December, in the interest of service user/staff safety.

Number of people on PUP drops

 

The number of people on the Pandemic Unemployment Payment dropped in the past week, despite new restrictions on the hospitality sector.

The benefit is reopened for those who’ve lost their jobs in the latest measures today.

Just over 53,000 people are in receipt of PUP this week – a three percent drop on last week.

The biggest drop over the past week was in the accommodation and food service sectors.

Donegal Mountain Rescue issue safety message

 

As storm Barra approaches, weather warnings have been issued across the country.

Donegal is set to escape the worst of the storm, with a yellow wind warning in place for the county, but the county council’s Emergency Response team is monitoring the situation.

Winds will strengthen this evening and tonight, with an Orange Wind Warning coming into place for the county from 2 am to 2 pm tomorrow.

Donegal Mountain Rescue is urging people to avoid high ground, as these conditions will only be more severe at elevation.

“As beautiful as our snow capped mountains look today, it may be best to enjoy them from afar in the comfort of your own home. Stay safe everyone.”

Investigation launched after theft on Arranmore

 

An investigation is continuing after a large sum of cash was stolen from a vehicle on Arranmore Island last weekend.

The incident occurred outside a home at Upper Plough between 6pm Friday 3rd December and lunchtime Saturday 4th December.

Gardaí said that a local man, who lives with a disability, discovered his van was broken into on Saturday afternoon.

A substantial sum of money and personal documents had been taken.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact Dungloe Garda Station.

Gardaí reissue appeal over arson attack

 

Gardaí have reissued an appeal for information over an arson attack last week.

The incident happened in Abbey Park in Manorcunningham shortly after 5am on Friday morning.

The fire brigade were on the scene quickly to extinguish the flames enough for Gardaí to carry out forensic examinations successfully.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact Gardai in Letterkenny.

Work completed replacing old water mains in Bundoran

 

Work has been completed in replacing old water mains in Bundoran.

This is the second phase of water mains replaced in Bundoran in most recent times, with approximately 1.4km of water mains replaced last year as part of the Donegal Countywide Water Mains Rehabilitation Project.

The water mains replaced were prone to frequent leakage and bursts causing supply disruptions and water quality issues for customers in the area.

The old mains were replaced with new high density plastic pipes.

59 admitted patients awaiting beds at LUH

Latest INMO figures show there were 59 people awaiting beds at Letterkenny University Hospital this morning, 19 of them on ED trolleys.

In Sligo, there were 36 admitted patients without beds, 21 of them in the ED.

The Letterkenny figure is the second highest in the state, and with a combined figure of 95, the North West figure is the highest in the country, and represents 22% of the national total of 439.

Searches conducted in Paris in Lyra Mckee murder investigation

 

Searches have been conducted in Paris as part of the investigation into the murder of Lyra Mckee.

Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team conducted a search of a production company in Paris earlier today led by two French Judges, with the assistance of French police.

Detectives believe that a camera crew from the production company was in Derry throughout the week of Lyra’s murder.

A European Investigation Order was carefully considered, sought and granted by Belfast Crown Court and the search was later approved and supported by senior members of the French judiciary.

A number of items have been recovered for further examination.
