Serious concern over lack of Garda patrol cars in Donegal

 

Serious concern has been raised over a lack of Garda patrol cars in Donegal.

Chief Superintendent Terry McGinn has described the situation as very difficult at the moment and has made several applications to Garda HQ in the hope of filling the gap.

However it’s understood that it’ll be the New Year before the purchasing of new cars will be considered.

The Chief Superintendent said that she has put forward a proposal to hire cars as an interim measure, stating it would be also cost effective.

The issue was raised at the latest sitting of the Donegal Joint Policing Committee where members agreed to write to the Department to urgently address the shortfall.

Heartless thieves steal donation box from charity lights display

Heartless thieves have stolen the donation box at the renowned Whoriskey’s Christmas Lights display.

The donation box was taken at around 9pm on Saturday evening.

It had been a busy night and it’s understood hundreds of euro may have been lost.

Money this year is being raised for the BUMBLEance service.

It’s not the first time this has happened, in 2019 the donation box was taken from the grounds of the well-known home lights display at Gortcally.

Ryan Rainey re-signs with Harps

Finn Harps have confirmed the re-signing of Ryan Rainey for next season. The local man was named the club’s Young Player of the Year after impressing in his debut season in Ballybofey.

The midfielder had to bide his time in the beginning of the season, but once he made the breakthrough he became a first-team regular, making 22 appearances in all competitions. The former Bonagee man showed an eye for a goal as well as a pass, chipping in with three goals and three assists.

Rainey told Finnharps.ie: “I’m buzzing to be back at the club for next season. I think if you look at our results and our final points total we’d have been well up the table in other years so it’s about trying to build on that now in what will be another very competitive league.”

Dromore’s Ulster Senior Club Championship came to an end on Saturday afternoon with a 1-16 to 0-13 defeat to Derrygonnelly after extra time.

Dromore trailed by three at the break before battling back to lead 10 points to nine but a last gasp point from Conall Jones brought the game to extra time which proved too much for the Tyrone champions as Derrygonnelly booked their Semi Final spot.

Derrygonnelly will play in the Ulster Senior Club Championship Semi Final after they beat Dromore 1-16 to 0-13 on Saturday afternoon.

The sides finished level in normal time at 10 points a piece but Shane McGullion’s goal in extra time helped the Fermanagh champions claim their six point win.

Newry claim victory at Letterkenny Rugby Club

Letterkenny Rugby Club suffered their third defeat of the season with a 16-12 loss at home to Newry.

John Anthony McFadden scored a first half try as Letterkenny trailed 10-7 but had three first half injuries and ended playing the second half with 14 men and failed to mount the comeback and were beaten by four points.

Elsewhere in the All Ireland Division 2C, Omagh Academicals beat Midleton 18-8 while City of Derry suffered a 43-0 to Skerries.

Dromore bow out of the Ulster Senior Club Championship

Tyrone’s Dromore bowed out of the Ulster Senior Club Championship after they were beaten 1-16 to 13 points by Derrygonnelly of Fermanagh after extra time.

Derrygonnelly led seven points to four at half time before Dromore battled to take the lead heading into the final moments of the game but Conall Jones late point sent the game to extra time.

Shane McGullion’s goal in extra time then helped seal the Fermanagh champions place in the Semi Finals.

Oisin McColgan and John Gerard McLaughlin called into Irish Amateur squad

Cockhill Celtic’s Oisin McColgan and John Gerard McLaughlin of Glengad United have been named in The Ireland Amateur international team.

The side will take on an Ireland Colleges & Universities team in a friendly in Dublin on Wednesday.

In what is a first outing for either of the affiliate sides since 2019, the game, to be hosted at Home Farm FC in Whitehall, will serve as a test for both teams as they look ahead to more matches in 2022.
