Gardai continue to investigate fatal crash in Raphoe

Gardaí are continuing to appeal for information after a woman died following a crash last week in Raphoe.

At approximately 2.30pm on Wednesday afternoon, two vehicles collided on Guesthouse End Road.

It’s believed one vehicle lost control and collided with a pedestrian.

The woman, aged in her 50s, was seriously injured and taken to Letterkenny University Hospital, she was later transferred to Tallaght University Hospital where she passed away yesterday morning.

Gardai believe car fire in Ballybofey was started deliberately

Gardai believe a car fire in Ballybofey on Friday night to be deliberate.

It was reported to Gardai at around 2:30am on Friday that a car was set on fire at the Navenny Street carpark.

The fire brigade attended the scene and the fire was extinguished.

Substantial damage has been caused to the car.

Gardai are appealing to anyone who was in the area of the Navenny Street carpark and surrounding streets and who may have observed any activity that may be of interest to contact Gardaí in Letterkenny on 074-9167100.

Oireachtas members to discuss future of Ireland’s rail network today

TD’s and Senators will today hear about the future of Ireland’s railway network and what must be done to improve it.

The Oireachtas Transport Committee will hear submissions to the All-Island Rail Review later, including proposals for a Western Railway Corridor.

People across the Island expressed ‘interest and enthusiasm’ in a recent public consultation about an All Island Rail Review.

One of the proposals to be considered would be the restoration of a rail network within County Donegal, linking it to the rest of Ireland’s rail network.

Motorcyclist arrested following high speed chase on Rossnowlagh beach

Gardai have been praised for their actions following a dramatic chase on Rossnowlagh beach on Sunday.

Video footage of an incident involving two motorcyclists speeding across the busy beach has been circulated widely on social media.

One motorcyclist was eventually apprehended by gardai who gave chase on foot after the motorcyclist fell off his bike.

One motorcyclist was arrested and is due to appear in court.

Concerns over anti-social behaviour in Bogside area of Derry

Police in Derry say concerns have been raised recently over anti-social behaviour in the Bogside area.

Underage drinking is said to be a specific problem.

Parents and guardians are being urged to speak to their children about socialising safely and in a way that doesn’t negatively impact others.

Police say they are working with partner agencies and will continue to patrol the area to provide reassurance to residents.

Meanwhile, Police also responded to concerns about speeding on the Foyle Road.

A road safety operation was conducted over the weekend. Police say they spoke with several motorists about their driving.

They say they will continue to enforce the law and work to make the roads safer.

Motorists are asked to think about the consequences of dangerous driving on not only you but your family also.

Need for resurfacing of High Rd, Letterkenny to be highlighted today

Letterkenny and Milford Municipal District will be told today that a comprehensive resurfacing programme is needed along the length of Letterkenny’s High Road from the traffic lights at the junction with Main Street right up to the Hospital Roundabout.

The issue is being raised by Cathaoirleach Jimmy Kavanagh who says there are a number of roads in the urban area which are in need of repairs.

However, he says the High Road needs to be prioritised:

More than 50,000 residential units to be built by end of 2023

More than 50,000 new residential units are expected to be built between now and the end of 2023 in Ireland.

The supply of new homes could however be impacted due to constraints in the construction sector as a result of the continued impact of the pandemic and labour shortages.

That’s according to the latest Housing Market Monitor published today by Banking & Payments Federation Ireland which shows mortgage drawdowns up 22% in the last quarter of 2021.

Families of healthcare workers who died from covid 19 to receive €100,000

The state is set to pay €100,000 to the families of healthcare workers who died from Covid 19.

The Irish Times reports that Health Minister Stephen Donnelly will seek approval for the move at today’s cabinet meeting.

Its thought that around 20 families will receive the tax free payment.

To qualify their loved ones will have had to have contracted Covid 19 in their workplace.
