4,764 new ROI Covid-19 cases this evening

4,764 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed this evening in the Republic of Ireland.

598 patients are now in hospital with the virus – down 13 from yesterday – while the ICU figure is down six, to 126.

The chief medical officer, Tony Holohan, says the incidence of Covid-19 remains ‘concerningly high’ here.

As of the latest HSE data, County Donegal’s 14-day incidence rate of 1,140 cases per 100,000 people was slightly below the national average of 1,287.6.

Almost 62,000 cases have been reported over the past two weeks – with the incidence rates highest in counties Westmeath and Carlow.

Four Donegal LEAs see decrease in Covid incidence

According to the latest figures, North Inishowen has maintained the highest incidence rate of Covid-19 in County Donegal – but its rate of the virus has fallen sharply in the last week.

It was one of four of Donegal’s seven Local Electoral Areas that saw a decrease in their Covid incidence in the last seven days – five of them were also below the national average.

Latest figures show that North Inishowen had 250 cases of Covid-19, and a 14-day incidence rate of 1,473 cases per 100,000 people – that incidence is down 501 cases per 100,000 on last week.

Milford had the second-highest figure in the county, but also saw notable drops in its Covid incidence, with 196 cases and a rate of 1,423 – down 290 on last week.

Other LEAs that showed sharp decreases in Covid incidence were Glenties and South Inishowen – Glenties with 249 cases and a rate of 1,041, down 107 on last week, and South Inishowen with 222 cases and a rate of 992, down 210.

However some rises were seen in other areas – Lifford-Stranorlar had 317 cases and a rate of 1224, a rise of 158. The Donegal LEA saw 275 cases and a rate of 1038, an increase of 162, and in the Letterkenny LEA there were 322 cases and a rate of 1080, up 50.

Almost 6,000 HSE staff absent due to Covid

Almost 6,000 HSE staff are absent from work due to Covid-19.

The Executive says it’s a big concern for the health service, and they haven’t seen this level of absence since late January.

Chief executive Paul Reid has said it’s obvious people are responding to new restrictions on working from home and advice to cut social contacts – but will need to maintain that effort in order to relieve some of the pressure currently on the health service.

Chief Clinical Officer Colm Henry says the situation is tough on the already exhausted staff:

Almost 2.5 million people now employed in Ireland

Latest Government figures show that there were almost 2.5 million people employed in the Republic of Ireland at the end of Quarter 3 in September.

The Department of Finance say that just over 221,000 jobs were created here in the first nine months of the year – with almost 152,000 of those jobs created outside of Dublin.

But of these new jobs created, they say that just 107,000 of the jobs created year-on-year were full time positions.

Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe also said that there were 150,000 more people in some form of employment this Summer compared to two years ago.
