McConalogue hits back at Pringle criticism

Agriculture and Marine Minister Charlie McConalogue has rejected a claim from Donegal Deputy Thomas Pringle that the government has effectively given up on the Irish fishing industry.

Deputy Pringle was speaking Minister McConalogue asked the cabinet to approve a €66 million decommissioning scheme for the whitefish sector, as part of a suite of measures to combat the effect of Brexit on quotas.

Deputy Pringle says Minister McConalogue would serve the industry better if he fought for more quota.

Minister McConalogue says he is doing that, suggesting it is somewhat ironic that Deputy Pringle is taking this position, given that he supported Brexit.

Minister McConalogue says the decommissioning scheme was suggested by the Fisheries Taskforce……

LGFA confirm Maxi Curran’s reappointment

The Donegal LGFA have confirmed their managerial appointments for the coming season.

As expected Maxi Curran has been reappointed as Donegal Ladies Senior Manager which was agreed at the Donegal LGFA AGM last  Sunday.

Curran has been at the helm since the 2018 campaign and has lead Donegal to two Ulster Senior titles during his tenure.

Gregory Harkin was appointed U14 Manager, Francie Martin Minor Manager and Liam Skelly U16 Manager.

3,666 Covid cases confirmed

3,666 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed this evening.

638 people with the virus are receiving treatment in hospital, that’s down 46 on yesterday’s figure.

130 people are in ICU.

Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan says they’re aware the public’s worry around Covid-19 has increased but says people are following the public health advice.

HSE says it will consider pop-up test centre for Inishowen

The HSE says it will consider another pop up Covid testing centre in Inishowen.

The issue was raised at a Regional Health Forum meeting this afternoon by Cllr Albert Doherty, who told the online discussion that figures in Inishowen are rising at a worrying rate.

The previous walk in testing centre on the peninsula ceased operations at the end of September, with people having to go to Letterkenny to be tested.

Fuel prices at their highest ever level – AA

Both petrol and diesel prices have increased by over a quarter when compared with last year.

New figures from the AA show the cost of filling up is at a record high, with petrol at 1 euro 72 point 6 cent a litre.

Diesel isn’t too far behind at 1 euro 63-point-3 cent a litre.

AA Ireland spokesperson Anna Cullen says it’s the highest ever, having passed the previous peak of nine years ago……….

Public inquiry needed into council’s Mica dealings – Pringle

The Taoiseach has told the Dail that while the government will seek accountability regarding Mica, a public inquiry would take years to complete, and cannot be the immediate priority.

Michael Martin was responding to Deputy Thomas Pringle, who raised recent media reports about the purchase of five Mica affected houses by Donegal County Council.

Deputy Pringle also raised questions about the council’s dealings with companies that supplied Mica affected blocks.

He told Deputies these are questions that the government must address……………

Windows smashed at Letterkenny

 

A window has been smashed at a house in Letterkenny.

The incident happaned at Ashlawn on Friday evening last between 5pm and 5.15pm.
A window at the side of a house was smashed between those times.

Gardai are asking anyone who was in the Ashlawn area and who observed what happened or if anybody has any information in relation to the incident to contact them.

Meanwhile in a separate incident  Gardaí were alerted to the fact that a window pane had been smashed at a house at Mc Clures Terrace, Letterkenny on Tuesday the 16th of November at 9.10pm.

Gardai are appealing to anybody who was in that area around the time and who may have observed any people/activity in the area to contact them in Letterkenny.

Georgie Kelly shortlisted for Player of the Year

SSE Airtricity League Premier Division top scorer Georgie Kelly has been nominated for the PFAI Player of the Year award.

The Bohemians striker is shortlisted alongside Shamrock Rovers defender Roberto Lopes and Chris Forrester of St Pats.

Donegal man Kelly ended thecseason with a 21 goal tally, six clear of Daniel Mandroiu.

Bohs pair Dawson Devoy and Ross Tierney have been nominated for Young Player of the Year alongside UCD’s Colm Whelan.

Whelan has also been shortlisted for First Division Player of the Year alongside teammate Liam Kerrigan and Ryan Brennan of Shelbourne

Government is “giving up” on the fishing industry – Pringle

A Donegal TD claims that the government has effectively given up on the Irish fishing industry.

Deputy Thomas Pringle was speaking after the reports that Ministers Charlie McConalogue and Pippa Hackett have asked the cabinet to approve a €66 million decommissioning scheme for the whitefish sector.

It’s understood the proposed measure is a response to the quota reductions caused by Brexit.

However, Deputy Thomas Pringle says rather than facilitating what Europe wants, the government should be fighting for the sector………….
