NPHET Member: “we don’t want to go back to lockdown”

A member of the National Public Health Emergency Team says the group does not want to advise the government to introduce another lockdown.

But Director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory, Dr Cillian de Gascun, says the high transmissibility of the Delta variant means that basic public health measures will have less impact than they had at the start of the pandemic.

Earlier this week, updated modeling revealed that up to 200,000 people could be infected with Covid next month, if the growth of the virus continues at the current rate.

Dr Cillian de Gascun says the most vulnerable and the health service will need to be protected from this surge, even if NPHET does not want to impose restrictions:

Senator Blaney calls for Government to better help people understand NI Protocol

A Donegal Senator believes the Irish Government has a role to play in helping people, particularly North of the border, to understand the issues around the Northern Ireland protocol and the effects of it.

Senator Niall Blaney was speaking in the Seanad this week after a delegation recently met with representatives of Unionist parties in Belfast, among whom he said there were some who believed that implementing Article 16 was not as serious as people believe it to be.

He also told Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney that a recent study conducted by Queen’s University Belfast shows there is a very poor understanding of the implementation of the protocol, how it will be implemented and the effects it will have.

Senator Blaney who is a member of the Good Friday Agreement Committee says the Government could give the North a voice:

Several Border Communities Against Brexit protests taking place today

Several protests are taking place along the border today, over concerns that Britain will revoke Article 16 of the Brexit withdrawal agreement – a move that would have serious consequences for the future of the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Border Communities Against Brexit will hold the demonstrations at the Lifford Bridge in County Donegal, as well as counties Derry, Tyrone and Cavan.

They are accusing Boris Johnson of damaging the peace process in Northern Ireland – and want him to back off on his Article 16 threats.

Spokesperson for the group, JJ O’Hara is urging people on both sides of the border and from different communities to join the protests:

Demetrius Andrade sent a message to the entire middleweight division on Friday night retaining his WBO middleweight crown with a second-round win against Jason Quigley.

The Donegal man was on the deck three times over the 5 minutes and 24 seconds of the fight.

Jason is hurting after the fight and says his disappointed with how the fight went and his own performance.

“I feel disappointed. I’m disappointed that it was over so quickly. I was put down, yeah, but it was like a flash knockdown and I felt as if there was a lot more in me and a lot more to give.

“I’m disappointed that I didn’t have the time to give more. I feel very disappointed for all of the fans who travelled over and came to support me. They didn’t get the right chance to have a better atmosphere.

“I was put down, but I wasn’t hurt. Everything the ref asked me to do, I did it: Take a step left, take a step right, I was almost doing it before him.

“It was a special atmosphere. It’s a bittersweet one because it was special with the atmosphere and the support, which was unbelievable. I’m just so disappointed that I didn’t get the chance to  make more of an atmosphere after traveling all this way.

“I’m disappointed with my own performance. I was happy with the way things were going. I was doing the things me and Andy had planned on doing. I felt comfortable. I didn’t feel in danger until he landed. Even when I got up, I didn’t feel that I was in trouble.

“I’m looking forward to spending time with my family and having a good time with them over Christmas. I put a lot of time and dedication into this fight. I’m not even going to think about what’s next. I want to spend some time with my family first.
