Higgins wants Derry to finish on a high

The curtain falls on this year’s Premier Division campaign on Friday night with just a couple of issues left to be decided in the final set of fixtures.

Derry close out their season at Oriel Park where a fourth place finish is still a possibility for the visitors. For that to happen however, the Candystripes would have to better Bohemians’ result against Sligo at the Showgrounds.

There’s no Junior, Eoin Toal or Marc Walsh but Bastien Hery is back from International duty and Cameron McJannet is fit again.

For Derry to reach Europe they need to finish fourth and hope St Pats win the cup.

Derry Manager Ruaidhri Higgins knows Oriel Park is a difficult place to win and wants his side to finish on a high:

Donegal champions St Eunan’s and  Derry kingpins Watty Grahams Glen go head to head on Sunday for a place in the quarter finals of the Ulster Senior Club Championships.

The Derry side who are spearheaded by Conor Glass are seen as favourites for the game but as was the case in the county final, the Letterkenny side are quite happy coming under the radar.

In the past St Eunan’s record at Ulster level hasn’t been to what was expected of the black and amber faithful but there’s a great hope that with the game at the O’Donnell Park the home side can prevail against the odds again.

St Eunan’s Manager Rory Kavanagh has been looking ahead to the game with Oisin Kelly:

More pressure on health service now than previously – Reid

19 per cent of Covid hospitalisations are requiring ICU treatment – compared with around 10 per cent in January.

The HSE says the virus is currently having a higher impact on the health system than at any other time during the pandemic.

38 per cent of admissions to ICU due to Covid-19 have been fully vaccinated between the end of June and last week. Last night, there were 17 patients with Covid in Letterkenny University Hospital, one of them in ICU.

HSE CEO Paul Reid says they are trying to keep non-virus care going……..

OCO CEO says Gweedore was the right choice for expansion

The CEO of OCO Global says they chose to establish a strategic base gteic in Gweedore because of the facilities Udaras na Gaeltachta were able to offer and the commitment of the people in the area.

However, Mark O’Connell says while the decision was made for business reasons, the fact that he has had a second home in Brinaleck for over 20 years helped deal the deal.

Headquartered in Belfast, the international trade and investment consulting firm works with governments around the world and advises private sector clients on international expansion.

Mark O’Connell says Gweedore was the right location for this expansion…………

Tense scenes in Dail over appointments to climate council

The Green Party Leader has been further accused of cronyism in appointing his former adviser and a former party activist to the National Climate Change Advisory Council.

The Government has been forced to defend the two appointments to the CAAC since it emerged that they were hand-picked.

There were tense scenes on the issue in the Dail this afternoon.

Minister Eamon Ryan was responding to questions from Donegal Deputy Pearse Doherty when the Ceann Comhairle had to intervene:

COVID-19 tests available in Donegal

The HSE have confirmed that appointments for COVID-19 tests are available in Donegal.

In relation to Sligo and Monaghan Community Testing Centres, due to extremely high demand for COVID-19 Testing self -referral slots are full for today, but the HSE is monitoring their test appointment slots continually throughout the day and release additional appointment slots as they become available.

The HSEs priority is to make sure GPs can refer patients for COVID-19 PCR testing where they feel it is warranted, and that close contacts of confirmed cases who are identified as requiring a COVID -19 PCR test get their test appointment as quickly as possible.

Ensuring these two groups are prioritised does mean that those outside these categories may not be able to book a test until the following day.

Testing for all centres across CHO1 can be booked online at www.hse.ie

Calls for continuation of supports in wake of new restrictions

The Donegal Chair of the Irish Hotels Federation is calling for the continuation of Government supports in the wake of new restrictions for the hospitality sector.

It comes as hotels in Donegal are reporting cancellations of Christmas functions in recent weeks over what’s been described as a nervousness among some customers on attending gatherings.

IHF Donegal Chair Paul Diver says it’s clear the public saw the writing on the wall as did the industry.

However, Mr. Diver stressed that if the jobs and businesses are to be survive into the New Year, supports be reinstated:
