Jeep stolen and set alight in Letterkenny

 

A jeep has been stolen and set alight in Letterkenny.

The jeep had been parked in a secure yard when the theft occurred.

The incident happened in the early hours of Friday morning last.

Gardaí are investigating the unauthorised taking of a red landrover jeep ’04 W 421′ that was stolen from a business premises on the Neil T Blaney Road, Letterkenny on Friday last shortly before 3.40am.

It is believed the jeep travelled in the direction of the Paddy Harte Road.

It was discovered later on the same date at 7.10pm at Fernhill, Letterkenny. It had been set on fire and was completely destroyed as a result.

Gardai are appealing to anybody with any relevant information to contact them in Letterkenny.

Gardai are appealing to anybody who was in the area of the Neil T Blaney Road/Paddy Harte Road around that time and who may have observed this jeep being driven or who may have captured it on their dash cam footage to contact them.

Gardai are also asking anybody who may have observed the occupant/s flee from the jeep in the area of Fernhill on Friday evening to make contact with them in Letterkenny .

LUH second most overcrowded in Ireland today

 

Letterkenny University Hospital is the second most overcrowded in Ireland today.

As of this morning, there were 56 people awaiting admission – 18 on trolleys in its Emergency Department and a further 38 were waiting on wards.

Nationally, 409 admitted patients are waiting for beds this morning, according to today’s INMO Trolley Watch. 319 patients are waiting in the emergency department, while 90 are in wards elsewhere in the hospital.

University Hospital Limerick today recorded its highest daily trolley figure on record with 95 people waiting there.

Two youths wanted in connection with Letterkenny burglary

 

Two youths are wanted in connection with a burglary in Letterkenny.

The incident happened at the Tennis Club on the High road at 3am on Saturday morning.

A window to the side of the entrance door was smashed and entry was gained.

Damage was caused to an internal door also but nothing was stolen.

The two youths were captured on CCTV footage entering the building at approx. 3am and they spent approx. 10 minutes inside.

They had their faces covered.

Gardai say that additional CCTV will also be examined in the surrounding areas.

They are appealing to anyone, particularly taxi drivers who may have been on the Port Road or the High Road between 2.45am and 3.15am and who may have captured these youths on dash cam footage to contact them in Letterkenny.

Issues with respite services in Inishowen yet to be resolved

 

Issues with respite services in North Inishowen have yet to be resolved.

Three centres on the peninsula had been closed for long periods of time with a Covid outbreak to blame for one of the closures.

This resulted in staff being redistributed and now recruiting the necessary personnel is said to be a major issue.

Two of the centres including Cashel Na Cor, which provides day services, is due to open next week but only two days a week.

Women’s cancer operation delayed over Covid test miscommunication

 

A woman who was due to have a cancerous lump removed in Galway today has hit out at Letterkenny University Hospital over an alleged miscommunication in her positive Covid test.

Carmel was diagnosed with breast cancer three weeks ago and has received both Covid-19 vaccines and a booster jab.

Carmel travelled to Galway on Sunday night but when she arrived to the hospital, she was told by staff there that she was Covid positive and to return home immediately.

Latest covid projections ‘very stark’

 

The Health Minister says the latest covid projections are very stark and efforts must be made to prevent them.

New NPHET modelling has warned up to 500 people could need critical care by next month, in a worst-case scenario.

NIAC has approved extending the booster programme to those over the age of 50 and people with underlying conditions.

Border protests getting underway this weekend

 

Two demonstrations are taking place along the Donegal border this weekend to oppose the threat by the British Government to trigger Article 16.

Border Communities Against Brexit believe that recent statements from the UK Government pose a direct threat to the Peace Process and are raising the prospect of a hard border in Ireland.

The protests are getting underway on Saturday at 3pm at Lifford Bridge and at Bridgend and in other areas along the border

Draw made for North West of Ireland Intermediate Cup

 

The draw was made on Monday night for the North West of Ireland Intermediate Cup.

This is the recently formed cup competition for teams from the Ulster Senior League and the Northern Ireland Intermediate League.

There will be five first round matches and they are as follows:

Strabane Athletic v Letterkenny Rovers
Newtown v Cockhill Cetlic
Derry City Reserves v Maiden City
Monaghan United v Dungiven
Bonagee United v Trojans

The teams to receive byes to the quarter finals are Finn Harps, Ardstraw and Newbuildings United

The first round matches will be played in January

Further cuts to PUP today

 

Recipients of the Pandemic Unemployment Payment will see their money cut further from today.

Those receiving the rate of 250 euro per week will now receive 203 euro while the other PUP rate of 300 euro will reduce to 250 euro.

The reductions are part of gradual phasing out of the pandemic payment – with the next change set to be implemented in February.

Drop in number of motor insurance claims

 

A new report on motor insurance shows the average cost of a premium fell by seven percent last year.

The data published by the Central Bank for 2020 also shows a 26 percent drop in the number of claims by drivers.

Insurers also issued premium rebates amounting to 42.5 million euro due to Covid lockdown restrictions.

Director of Economic and Statistics at the Central Bank, Mark Cassidy, says insurers still made a profit despite the money they gave back to customers:
