Cabinet to sign off on Mother & Baby Home redress

 

The Cabinet is due to sign off on a long awaited compensation scheme for the survivors of Mother and Baby Homes when it meets this morning.

It’s understood the scheme is worth 800 million euro and will also include an action plan on access to birth records.

The Children’s Minister will bring the proposals to senior ministers this morning and they will then be sent to survivors once approved.

The scheme was originally due to be finalised by the end of April.

The Cabinet will consider covid measures including working from home, when it meets this morning.

Last night the cabinet sub-committee heard up to 500 people with Covid could require ICU admission by next month, under a worst-case scenario – in new NPHET modelling.

622 people are in hospital with the virus, with 117 being treated in intensive care.

Ministers will consider the need for covid certs to access gyms, hairdressers and barbers, the wider use of antigen testing and a booster programme for those aged 50 and over.

New extension for Tory Island school a step closer

 

It’s been announced that Scoil Naomh Cholmchille on Tory Island has been given approval to advance to the tender process for an extension to the school.

The proposed works, under the Additional School Accommodation Scheme, would provide two extra classrooms for the school as part of an extension.

Donegal Deputy Charlie McConalogue said that: ” (the) progression of this project is good news for the local community, for the staff, students and parents of the school… I thank Minister Norma Foley for confirming the news and for the work of Cllr Noreen McGarvey and the staff, students and parents of the school for progressing the project”.

HISCo to help speed up house construction in Letterkenny

 

HISCo, the Housing Infrastructure Services Company is to be asked to make a presentation to members of the Letterkenny Milford Municipal District to discuss how it can help speed up house construction in the area.

The company was set up to help developers provide infrastructure, including roads, footpaths, cycle lanes, water and wastewater facilities and other amenities.

Cllr McBride says there is a need for thousands of new homes in Letterkenny, not least because of the impending Mica demolition and rebuild programme.

He believes HISCo can play a role in that:

‘Big effort’ in Buncrana for Tidy Towns competition

 

The Chairperson of Buncrana Tidy Towns Committee says a serious amount of work has been undertaken in very trying times over the last year.

Buncrana was awarded the Local Authority Pollinator Award for 2021, the second time the committee has won that honour while they also came with a gold medal in the main Tidy Towns competition for the sixth year running – and had the second-highest marks in the county, just behind Letterkenny.

4,570 new ROI Covid-19 cases this evening

The Department of Health has announced 4,570 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the Republic of Ireland this evening.

There are now 622 people in hospitals with the virus, with 117 of those in ICUs.

The HSE’s CEO Paul Reid said earlier today that “around 300” of those patients are receiving enhanced treatment, including ventilation.

These numbers come as the Government’s cabinet sub-committee on Covid is set to meet this evening to discuss a response to the continuous rise in case numbers and hospitalisations from the virus.

Government not considering lockdowns for unvaccinated – Taoiseach

The Taoiseach says a lockdown for unvaccinated people isn’t being considered, despite ever-rising Covid case numbers and hospitalisations.

The cabinet sub-committee on Covid meets this evening to discuss new measures aimed at reducing infection rates.

They’ll be discussing the expanded use of covid certs and antigen tests – as well as asking people to work from home.
