More Donegal people encouraged to apply for Garda Youth Awards

More schools and community groups in Donegal are being encouraged to apply for the Garda Youth Awards.

The awards celebrate outstanding young people aged between 13 and 21 years, and recognise the good work they are doing throughout their communities

Gardaí have been distributing nomination forms to schools, youth groups and voluntary organisations right across Donegal via email.

Chair of the Donegal Joint Policing Committee Cllr Gerry McMonagle says while they have received a number of applications to date, the amount so far is down compared to years previous.

Cllr McMonagle who is also an adjudicator, believes that there are still lot of worthy candidates in Donegal yet to apply:

Government urged to make amendments to Leader Programme

The Government is being urged to make amendments to the new Leader Programme.

The Programme provides funding to support community-led rural development with many successful Donegal projects over the last few years.

As part of new programme the rate for businesses has been increased to 75% however community groups are in the same category.

Cllr Martin McDermott says these groups will struggle to come up with that kind of match funding and is calling for the rate to be increased to 90%:

Michael McGrath & Simon Coveney top new poll

A new poll shows Ministers Michael McGrath and Simon Coveney are favourites to become the next leaders of Fianna Fail and Fine Gael.

Other contenders for the Fianna fail leadership include former ministers Dara Calleary and Barry Cowen as well as current ministers Norma Foley and Darragh O’Brien.

Simon Coveney is ahead of Justice Minister Helen McEntee and Higher Education Minister Simon Harris to be the next leader of Fine Gael.

The Sunday Independent / Ireland Thinks poll also suggests that there would be no surge in support for Labour if Dublin Bay south TD Ivana Bacik is appointed as party leader, replacing Alan Kelly who stepped down on Wednesday night.

Motorists clocked speeding in icy conditions near Letterkenny

A number of motorists have been clocked speeding in icy conditions on the outskirts of Letterkenny.

One car was caught travelling at 156KPH in a 100 zone while the other was traveling at 1363KPH.
A Garda spokesperson says slowing down on the approach to junctions, corners and bends is critical.
Each time you travel, decrease your speed in order to decrease your risk of being seriously injured or killed on the roads.
Gardai are also warning that the combination of sunny clear days and icy roads can result in sunglare.
Drivers can be temporarily dazzled or blinded by the intensity and brightness of a low sun on the horizon.
In such conditions drivers are reminded to:
Minimize the risk by wearing sun glasses
Ensure that your windscreen is clear of grease or grime inside and out. Add windshield washer fluid to the water in the reservoir and check that the wipers are not worn away or damaged. Replace them if they are.

IFA react to compulsory crop growing plans

All Irish farmers are to be told to plant wheat, barley and other grains as part of emergency food security plans being drawn up by Government.

The Business Post reports Ireland imports about 60 percent of the grain consumed here, as there’s fears of a food crisis with Ukraine’s farms out of action.

The Agriculture Minister is setting up an emergency response team within his department to assist in responding to a ‘rapidly evolving situation.’

IFA President, Tim Cullinan says Charlie McConalogue needs to act soon because planting season is coming soon:
