Work to commence on problematic water supply in Inishowen

It’s been confirmed that work is to start to fix what’s been described as the most problematic water supply in south Inishowen.

The line at Inch Island serves hundreds of customers yet bursts quite frequently, sometimes leaving residents without water for long periods of time.

Irish Water has stated that it is to carry out replacement works to the main line in the New Year.

Local Cllr Jack Murray will be keeping the pressure on to ensure the project is fast tracked:

Officials to meet with hospitality sector over compliance with Covid rules

Government officials will meet the hospitality sector today about their lack of compliance with Covid rules.

The Department of the Taoiseach sought the meeting on Friday, after new ESRI data was released.

It found 34 per cent of customers in restaurants aren’t having their Covid certs checked – and 37 per cent in pubs.

But Adrian Cummins, from the Restaurants Association, disputes that:

Over 3,000 Covid cases reported every day over past week

Over 3,000 cases of Covid-19 have been reported every day over the past week.

3,161 new infections have been confirmed this evening – but that’s an estimate, due to a technical issue.

498 Covid patients are in hospital, an increase of 20 from yesterday, while the ICU figure is up three, to 78.

The chief medical officer, Tony Holohan, says cases are dropping in age-groups who’ve received a booster vaccine.

LUH very busy this afternoon

Letterkenny University Hospital is very busy this afternoon with long wait times at the Emergency Department.

It comes as there were 45 people awaiting admission there this morning.

In a statement, Management say that the hospital is currently treating a significant number of very sick patients and as a result there are fewer patients well enough to go home to free up beds for patients who are being admitted today.

In addition, the hospital is caring for an increased number of patients with COVID-19; as of 8pm yesterday there were 22 patients with COVID-19 being treated in the hospital, with two of these patients in ICU.

This pressure on bed capacity means that patients are facing long waiting times to be admitted from the Emergency Department to a bed on a ward.

The hospital acknowledges that these delays are very difficult for patients and their families and apologises for the inconvenience and distress these delays cause.

Given the volume of patients attending the Emergency Department, the hospital is asking the public to contact their GP during normal surgery hours or the NoWDOC GP Out of Hours service in the first instance if their health problem is not urgent.

The hospital is committed to treating everyone who presents at the ED; people are seen and treated strictly in order of medical priority.

As part of the hospital’s COVID-19 protective measures, patients coming to the Emergency Department are asked to:
• Wear a face covering at all times
• Use hand gel frequently
• Maintain social distancing
• Come alone to the ED – a companion is only permitted in exceptional circumstances
• Answer screening questions; and
• Take a COVID-19 test as required.

Eastwood urges anti-protocol politicians not to inflame situation

The driver of a bus that was hijacked and set alight in Newtownabbey, County Antrim last night has been left traumatised, according to the union representing him.

Unite trade union has called on all politicians to act to end these attacks.

Masked men forced passengers and the driver off a bus at the loyalist Rathcoole Estate – before torching the vehicle.

It comes just a week after another bus hijacking in Newtownards, which was linked to opposition to the Northern Ireland Protocol.

SDLP leader and Foyle MP Colum Eastwood says politicians who want the protocol scrapped should be careful of the language they use………..
