McEleney goal gives Derry victory at Shels

Derry City took a second win of the Premier Division campaign beating Damien Duff’s Shelbourne 1-0 at Tolka Park.

The games only goal came on 73 minutes and was scored by Patrick McEleney who tapped in following a header from Ronan Boyce.

The goal was McEleney’s first for Derry since his return to the Brandywell club from Dundalk.

The win sees Derry sit joint top on 6pts with St Patrick’s Athletic and Shamrock Rovers.

Pats on Friday beat the defending Champions Rovers at Richmond Park 1-0.

Council advises of upcoming road closures

Donegal County Council has advised of upcoming road closures. 

Rosemount Lane in Letterkenny from the junction of Main Street, Letterkenny to the Junction of Rosemount Terrace will be closed to traffic from 8am Monday March 7th to 6pm Friday March 11th.

Traffic approaching from Upper Main Street will be diverted via Lower Main Street and onto Oliver Plunkett Road and directed towards the Pearse Road R-250 and onto Rosemount Lane.

Meanwhile due to the essential road works, the R259 Dungloe – Burtonport road at Meenmore will be blocked from 9:00am to 3.00pm tomorrow Saturday 5th March.

The exact location of the road closure is 450m past the turn off for Dungloe Car breakers on the Burtonport side at Meenmore.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and give extra times for their journey in this area during the specified times.

Police probe second vehicle theft in Strabane

Detectives are investigating the theft of a vehicle in Strabane – the second theft this week in the District.

A purple BMW M4, registration number R50 0LAN, was reported stolen from Mourne Manor in the town shortly before 9am today (4th March), however, detectives believe it was taken several hours earlier, at around 3am.

Police are continuing to make enquiries in relation to this theft, and are asking anyone who was in the area around 3am and who noticed any suspicious behaviour to call them on 101.
Police are also appealing to drivers who were in the area to check their dashcam to see if they’ve captured footage of the vehicle.

Detective Sergeant Hanbidge is appealing to vehicle owners, in particular those with keyless entry cars, to do all they can to keep their vehicles safe.

“It’s worrying this is the second report of theft of a vehicle in our District this week. On Monday (28th February) a white BMW X5, registration number CD0 8ETH, was reported stolen from Glenview Manor in Strabane shortly after 2:05am and we are continuing to make enquiries in relation to this theft, including if it’s linked to today’s report.

Donegal ladies look to cement top spot – Nicole McLaughlin

Donegal look to make in three wins on the bounce when they travel to Mayo for a tie at the Connacht GAA Centre on Sunday.

The result of this one will determine who finishes top, and is pitted against the second placed team from Division 1B.

There are four changes to the Mayo team that started against Galway, as Hannah Reape makes her senior debut, while Donegal’s starting line-up shows two alterations, including the return of All Star attacker Geraldine McLaughlin.

The other is in defence with Evelyn McGinley back in the full back line. They replace Catherine Boyle and Katie Long.

Visiting restricted at Letterkenny University Hospital

 

Visiting at Letterkenny University Hospital has been restriction due to an outbreak of Covid-19 at the facility.

It’s currently limited to compassionate grounds only and these visits should be arranged in advance with the nurse manager on the ward.

Patients have been advised of the situation and will be kept updated on any changes.

There are separate arrangements in place for access to the maternity department for nominated support partners.

Advice for people attending hospital appointments
People who have outpatient or other appointments at the hospital are advised to attend their appointment unless contacted by a member of staff from the hospital and told otherwise.

Anyone coming to the hospital for an appointment must wear a face mask and use hand gel regularly. People should come to their appointments no earlier than ten minutes before the allotted time and come alone, unless the support of another person is essential.

People with COVID-19 symptoms should call the number on their appointment letter to rearrange their appointment.

Ireland’s economy grew by 13.5% last year

 

Ireland’s economy, grew by 13.5 per cent last year, driven by a strong upturn in multinational dominated sectors.

Figures from the CSO show that personal spending on goods and services increased by 5.7 per cent in the year.

The quarterly national accounts showed the impact of the pandemic varied across the economy in 2021.

Several sectors showed a higher level of economic activity last year, with the distribution, transport, hotels and restaurants sector growing by 6.2 per cent.

Arts and Entertainment saw a 12.6 per cent increase.

Police Ombudsman to publish report on Denis Donaldson murder

 

The Police Ombudsman is due to publish a report into the murder of republican informer Denis Donaldson next week, the Irish News reports.

The former republican prisoner and senior Sinn Féin official was shot dead at a remote cottage in the outskirts of Glenties in April 2006.

Nobody has ever been charged with Mr Donaldson’s murder despite a number of arrests being made in connection with the overall investigation in the years that followed.
