Donegal farmers already acting in a sustainable way – Flanagan

A Midlands North West MEP says farming sustainability is not a zero sum game, where environmental action comes at a cost to the farmer.

Luke Ming Flanagan says Taoiseach Michael Martin has been making the right noises at the COP 26, and Minister Charlie McConalouge must now match the rhetoric and fine words with actions in the ongoing CAP discussions.

Most importantly, Mr Flanagan says there must be honest dialogue with farmers, which recognises that while the dairy herd is growing, the suckler herd is reducing.

He says Donegal farmers are already acting in a sustainable way, and that means the county will benefit from the ECO schemes in CAP………

Ireland is a ‘laughing stock’ over fishing rights – MacLochlainn

The Taoiseach is being urged to devise a plan to secure more quota for Ireland at the next review of the Common Fisheries Policy.

The call has come from Donegal Deputy Padraig MacLochlainn, who told the Dail last evening that at present, the Irish fishing fleet is allocated 15% of the fish in our own waters, while 85% is allocated to the fishing fleets of other EU Member States.

He says this is in contrast to France, which has an allocation of over 50% in its own waters……..

Pitch Inspection at MacCumhaill Park today

A pitch inspection will be held today at MacCumhaill Park in Ballybfoey to determine if the ground can host two county finals this weekend.

It’s expected the Senior A final between St Eunan’s and Naomh Conaill will get the green light and will go ahead as planned at 3.15pm on Sunday but a doubt hangs over the Ardara St Eunan’s B final which could be moved after heavy rain over the past week.

Its understood work has been carried out at the ground in recent days to ease the water issue.

Questions had been raised about the condition of the pitch at the semi final hosting but early indications are the Twin Towns venue will be able to take two matches.
