Donegal has vaccine uptake rate of 81.3%

Around 10% of eligible people in eight counties remain unvaccinated against Covid-19.

New HSE figures show Donegal has one of the lowest uptake rates at 81.3%.

However, people availing of the vaccination programme in Northern Ireland may account for a portion of those who did not receive a vaccine in Donegal.

Figures up to the start of last week show Waterford has the highest uptake rate with 96.6% of over 12s fully vaccinated followed by Wexford and Carlow.

The point takes Waterford out of the relegation play off place, at the expense of Finn Harps.

For Derry, they are six points off third place Sligo with three games to play.

Údarás na Gaeltachta and LYIT sign MOD to support regional development

Údarás na Gaeltachta and Letterkenny Institute of Technology have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support regional development with a particular emphasis on the Irish language.

The agreement looks to examine opportunities for the sharing of resources to assist each of the partners to improve service provision and collaborate on the promotion and use of the Irish language in training and development activities.

Both organisations will also collaborate to promote community development and social enterprise in the Donegal Gaeltacht and identify and advance emerging sectors which can assist in the sustainable development of the region.

Untreated sewage could continue to be discharged into Donegal waters until 2027

The Environmental Protection Agency has warned that it could take two decades to bring the country’s wastewater infrastructure up to standard.

A new report by the EPA shows that 8 towns and villages across Donegal have no treatment plants and continue to release untreated sewage into the environment.

The earliest estimated date for treatment in the areas identified is 2023 while Moville will continue to discharge untreated sewage until 2027.

The watchdog also says Moville failed to comply with EU treatment standards in 2020.

Five areas in the county have also been identified as being prioritised to protect surface waters.

The EPA says Irish Water must complete overdue assessments of the impact of waste water discharges at designated shellfish waters in Donegal at Lough Swilly, McSwyres Bay and Sheephaven.

Sinn Fein consider running three Donegal candidates in next general election

A Donegal Deputy believes that there’s a clear demand to run three Sinn Fein Candidates in Donegal in the next General Election.

The party is considering the strategy as it moves to run more candidates across a number of constituencies.

Sinn Fein currently has two TDs in Donegal Pearse Doherty and Padraig MacLochlainn.

Deputy MacLochlainn, who lost his seat in 2016 due to a three candidate strategy, believes support has grown over the intervening years:

Legislation to ban fur farming to be debated today

TDs will today debate legislation that would ban fur farming in Ireland.

The cabinet approved the new laws last month – which would close three mink farms in Donegal, Laois and Kerry.

Farmers would get a compensation package of between 4 and 8 million euro for closing their operations next year.

Animal rights campaigner, John Carmody, says the ban is badly needed:

Worklink changes its name to ‘Ascain’

Worklink North West has changed its name to Ascain.

The service provides training and support services for people in recovery from mental ill health issues, with an emphasis on promoting positive mental health and recovery.

Management say the reason for the name change is that Worklink suggests they only deal with work, employment or occupation, when the reality is they deal with so much more.

Centre Manager Gemma McLoone, says they celebrate wellness, and run programmes to help educate and support people to be as independent as possible in their own lives, as well as assisting them to set and achieve their own goals.

She says this will continue, with an emphasis on the themes of Hope, Personal Responsibility, Education, Self Advocacy and Support.

The name ‘Ascain’, which means ‘journey’ was selected in a poll involving service users and staff, using the slogan “where people feel better.”

The service has locations in Letterkenny, Carndonagh, Dungloe, and Moville, and is currently in negotiations to bring a centre to Donegal Town.
