Údarás na Gaeltachta to assess future of Gaeltacht food sector

Údarás na Gaeltachta is to assess future requirements of the food sector in Gaeltacht regions.

A review of the food sector in the Gaeltacht is to be undertaken with a view towards preparing a development plan based on the future requirements of the sector.

Údarás na Gaeltachta has launched an expression of interest process for companies or people developing food products or businesses.

It’s hoped the expressions of interest will assist in preparing a development plan, under the Gaeltacht na hÉireann brand which will be based on sectoral demand for food preparation, manufacturing, testing, packaging and other facilities to enable research and development in the sector.

Údarás na Gaeltachta hopes to build on the international success of numerous Gaeltacht food and drink products and support individuals and small and large companies to undertake additional development..

An assessment of the potential of developing food hubs in Gaeltacht regions where the demand exists in order to provide a supportive environment in which new and existing business can commercialise their business ideas is also being carried out.

It is hoped such food hubs will create employment, increase the number of SMEs, attract more investment into the industry and region and increase demand for goods and services in the area also.

The closing date for Expression of Interest submissions is April 1st.

No plans to reduce island ferries and air service fares

The Government has no plans to include island ferries and air services under an upcoming reduction in public transport fares.

A 20% reduction in fare prices on transport services is set to come into effect by early May as part of a new scheme to help with the rising cost of living.

Last night, the Dail heard calls from Fianna Fail Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív for both island ferries and air services to be in included in the scheme.

Responding Minister Josepha Madigan says the move would leave private operators at a disadvantage:

But Deputy O Cuiv says that wouldn’t be the case:

Concern lack of EV charging points will impact tourism in Inishowen

Serious concern has been raised over a lack of charging points for electric vehicles across Inishowen.

It’s thought there are only a handful of such charging points currently in place across the entire peninsula.

It has led to fears that the lack of infrastructure could deter tourists from choosing to visit the area.

Cllr Johnny McGuinness says Inishowen has a lot to offer and it’s incumbent on Donegal County Council to improve the situation ahead of the tourism season:

There’s a warning inflation could double what was expected here by the end of the year.

The ESRI had predicted an inflation rate of between 4% and 6 % in 2022.

However spiralling fuel prices caused by the war in Ukraine have prompted fears the pressure around energy supplies may continue for a lot longer than had previously been expected.

Economist Jim Power has told the Irish Examiner that he believes the Irish inflation rate will peak at close to 10%.

Council urged to review policy of tenants purchasing council properties

Donegal County Council is being urged to review its policy as it relates to tenants buying out their Council homes.

It’s understood that a blanket ban on purchasing homes is currently in place until such time as the Council concludes assessments for the presence of Mica.

However Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council Cllr Jack Murray says a lot of properties date back to pre-Mica era and those tenants are being prevented from moving forward.

Cllr Murray says while he understands the Council is being cautious, it should lift the ban on older homes:
